Much Ado about Opera: Shakespeare in Opera The Ogden Opera Guild presents “Much Ado about Opera” featuring Utah Opera’s Ensemble Artists Tuesday, March 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the Garrison Choral Room (BC136), Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts. This is a free event. The program will be of special interest to vocal students, vocal instructors, foreign language speakers, and opera fans but the general public is more than welcome. The Ensemble Artists include Chanel Wood, soprano; Aaron Blake, tenor; Melissa Treinkman, mezzo-soprano; Brent Reilly Turner, baritone; Willem van Schalkwyk, pianist; with musical director, Carol Anderson and stage direction by Peter Webster. The five singers present a performance disguises as a rehearsal. The program features music by Hector Berlioz, Leonard Bernstein, Benjamin Britten, Charles Gounod, Cole Porter, Giuseppe Verdi and others. Music will be performed in a variety of languages: English, French, German, and Italian. The plays include “The Taming of the Shew”/”Kiss Me, Kate;” “Romeo and Juliet”/”West Side Story;” “Hamlet,” “The Merry Wives of Windsor;” “Much Ado about Nothing” and more. As Peter Webster, who also provided the adapted script, says about the program appearing as a rehearsal, “. . . Theatre is an art that is always preparing and opera is theatre . . . and the most human art. Art always seeks inspiration—O for amuse of fire—and these young artists . . . employ the vast ideas of Shakespeare, whose words are music, and clothe those ideas as opera. [Opera] is the art where music replaces words with notes to reach even deeper into our souls. [These] notes move at the speed of life and dance into our hearts like fire, a fire that does not burn. [They] refine the works of Shakespeare into gold, a pure currency we can use every day as we sing these great arias from composers who were inspired by the ideas . . . from the man whose soul was made of music.” All Winter Clothing Located at 2429 North Hwy. 158 Eden in the Diamond Peak Plaza.
