For four nights during the festival, the community was invited to come to a festive pre-screening reception at one of the Merchants, board an old-fashioned wooden trolley for a ride down to the Egyptian Theater in Ogden, watch one of the festivals films, then relax and enjoy a trolley ride home. High Altitude Fitness and ARC Physical Therapy Host Health Seminar High Altitude Fitness and ARC Physical Therapy is pleased to offer a free community seminar on weight loss and nutritional support. The seminar will be taught by Eileen Burke, PA, RN, Pm. with Eden business Health Resolutions. The seminar will be held Saturday, March 6 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the new High Altitude gym and Physical Therapy center located in Eden’s commercial park, which is located behind the Eden car wash and adjacent to S & S Construction. Burke states that everyone is welcome to attend. Eileen started her career as a Physician’s of the Weber State Department of Performing Arts. The Swing Era style dance band was formed specifically to give local musicians with big band experience an opportunity to continue playing for personal enjoyment as well as for community functions. Dinner, are free of charge. “Thanks to the generous support of local individuals, businesses and foundations, along with a special RAMP grant, we are able to offer all of our events to the public for free,” said festival organizer Ann Ellis. As in past years, the 2010 festival will feature nationally renowned storytellers: Patrick Ball, Donald Davis, Beauty and the Beast (Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss), and Leeny Del Seamonds. The festival also will feature performances from approximately 30 local storytellers and about 80 student storytellers from Davis, Morgan, Ogden, and Weber school districts. Festival organizers hold auditions each year to choose participants. This is one of the few opportunities in the country for children to share their tales on stage. Ellis said the 2010 festival features one of the strongest lineups of storytellers ever. This year’s festival will include several on-campus presentations that have been selected to benefit WSU students and faculty in many departments. Enjoy Dancing With 16-piece Junction City Big Band The sixteen-piece Junction City Big Band, directed by Dr. Earl Ericksen, presents their winter Weber State University Friday Dance Date on Friday, February 26 in the Shepherd Union Building Ballroom. Downbeat is at 8:30 p.m. but for those who need it, professional dance instruction by Margene Anderson will be offered at 7:15. Jazz stylist Ruth Stevenson will be a featured performer with the Big Band. Tickets are $1 for lessons and $7 per person. An intermission floorshow will provide entertainment while dancers have a chance to catch their breath and enjoy some light refreshments. Expect to hear some Big Band versions of famous songs for lovers at this dance. Bring your special dance partner and see what happens. The band was organized in 1987 under the direction of Dr. K. Earl Ericksen, then chair Storytelling Festival Celebrates 14th Year at WSU Sisters, Sisters, There Were Never Such Devoted Sisters The Smith sisters recently celebrated sister-in-law Jeane (Larry) Smith’s birthday at Maddox Restaurant. The Smith sisters, shown above from left to right, are Jeane, Ila, Cleo, Dona, Barbara, and Florence. Four of them are recently widowed; only Ila and Cleo are married. They all are independent, maintaining their own homes and driving their own cars. They also volunteer in the community. Their posterity number in the hundreds, all of them being mothers, grandmothers, and greatgrandmothers. They state that each new baby brings a blessing into their lives, and that their love of travel expands as they visit family members. She has a record of being proactive in community and volunteer endeavors, and says that she views the ability to help heal as a very comforting place. The WSU Storytelling Festival, first held in September 1996, is one of the few in the nation sponsored by a university in partnership with local school districts. A conference format of concurrent sessions over a three-day period allows listeners to select from a variety of storytelling genres. The annual storytellers’ dinner will be held February 23 in the Eccles Conference Center. “A Whale of a Tale” is the theme of this year’s dinner, where guests can meet the national storytellers. At that event, former WSU foreign languages professor Jean Andra Miller will receive the Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award in recognition of her years of support for the festival, including her work as a festival organizer and as a contributing storyteller specializing in French folk tales.
