Show Volume XVII Issue XV The Ogden Valley news Page 11 January 15, 2010 Deer Valley Resort Hosts VISA Freestyle Winter Dew Tour Comes to Snowbasin— New Partners for 2009-2010 Season International World Cup January 14 – 16 Adds The Winter Dew Tour completes their part- Tour is broadcast live on NBC Sports with Deer Valley Resort will host the 2010 Visa Freestyle International World Cup beginning Thursday, January 14 through Saturday, January 16. More than 300 athletes from approximately two dozen countries will participate in the competitions. This World Cup marks Deer Valley’s 12th year of hosting freestyle competition, including the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the 2003 FIS Freestyle World Championships, 1999 Chevy Truck U.S. Freestyle Championships, and seven World Cups (2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009). Deer Valley’s World Cup will be the second to last stop for the freestyle athletes (there will be one more World Cup in Lake Placid, New York) before the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) will announce its U.S. Freestyle Olympic team (aerial, mogul and ski cross disciplines) just after the Lake Placid event on January 26 at Deer Valley Resort, On Thursday, January 14, Deer Valley Resort will host the ladies’ and men’s mogul competition on Champion ski run. Ladies’ mogul qualifications will take place from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Men’s moguls qualifications will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Moguls finals for both ladies and men will take place from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m., with awards immediately following at approximately 2:30 p.m. An evening celebration will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Park City’s Historic Main Street, including live entertainment by The Bravery followed by fireworks. Free parking will be available at Deer Valley Resort. Please utilize the free Park City bus transportation to and from Main Street. On Friday, January 15, the ladies’ aerial qualifications take place on Deer Valley’s White Owl ski run from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m., and the men’s aerial qualifications from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Ladies’ aerial finals will be held from 8:00 to 8:20 p.m. and the men’s aerial finals will be held from 8:25 to 8:45 p.m. Awards for both ladies’ and men, along with a fireworks display, will immediately follow the competition at approximately 8:55 p.m. Saturday, January 16, Deer Valley Resort will host a second mogul competition on Champion ski run at night under the lights. Ladies’ mogul qualifications will take place from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m., and men’s mogul qualifications will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mogul finals for both ladies’ and men will take place from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m., with awards and a fireworks display immediately following at approximately 9:15 p.m. All events are free to the public. For those guests looking for an enhanced spectator experience, Freestyle Feast tickets are still available for Thursday’s moguls competition for $65. While there, I soon learned that among the more prominent problems for the people of this region is a chronic lack of adequate health care. Pulmonary disease develops at an early age there due to open cook fires in the homes, and diarrheal illnesses, diabetes, and intestinal parasitic infections are also common. Although a small hospital had been built in the 1960’s, it had long been abandoned. In 2004, with much effort, a local group with international assistance began renovating the abandoned hospital. This was completed in 2005, providing 24 hour medical care for the first time in over a decade. Then, almost unbelievably, only six months after its opening, rains from Tropical Storm Stan unleashed a devastating landslide that buried the new hospital as well as hundreds of people. When dug out, the hospital building was unsalvageable and the area where the slide occurred was declared unsafe and uninhabitable. Entering its second season, the top athletes in the world will take part in this year’s Winter Dew Tour, all competing for the highly coveted Dew Cup that will be awarded in Mount Snow, Vermont at season’s end. The 2008-09 Dew Cup champions include Shaun White (Snowboard Superpipe and Slopestyle), Kelly Clark (Snowboard Superpipe), Spencer O’Brien (Snowboard Slopestyle), PK Hunder (Freeski Slopestyle), and Tanner Hall (Freeski Superpipe). Winter Dew Tour The Winter Dew Tour consists of three major, multi-sport events spanning across the country, with a cumulative points system, and a $1.5 million competitive purse. Each event features snowboard (superpipe and slopestyle) and freeskiing (superpipe and slopestyle) for both men and women. At season’s end, the overall point’s leaders are crowned year-end champions and awarded the prestigious Dew Cup. As part of an Alli property, key lifestyle elements compliment the competitions at each Tour event including the Festival Village, specialty competitions, and live, cutting-edge music. In Ogden, the rock band Dashboard Confessional will offer a free concert in downtown as part of the Winter Dew Tour. The concert will be held on 25th Street at 7:00 p.m. on January 15 with an afterparty at 10:00 p.m. at Brewski’s, 244 25th Street.
