Show Page The Ogden Valley news Volume XVII Issue XV January 15, 2010 Announcements Obituaries Louis Matthews Shea Louis Matthews Shea (Father Baldwin) passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Wasatch Care Center in Ogden, Utah. He was born January 2, 1928 in Decatur, Illinois, a son of Louis Shea and Teresa Genevieve Evans. He grew up in Decatur and received his formal education there, then attended the William Bernell Toombs William Bernell Toombs, 80, died December 29, 2009. He was born January 24, 1929 in Logan, Utah, the son of William Wilford and Effie Nelson Toombs. He attended North Cache William Toombs High School. Bernell served in the Army during WWII. He married Barbara Smith Huddleston in Pocatello, Idaho on July 2, 1970. Bernell was a member of the Huntsville 2nd Ward. One of his most enjoyable callings was serving with his wife as Service Missionaries at Temple Square; they also served as Stake Missionaries. He served as Justice of the Peace in Huntsville for many years. He enjoyed run- Rose Granato Jones Mower Eden - Our “Pretty Girl” Rose Granato Jones Mower died January 5, 2010 at the home of her granddaughter, surrounded by loving family. Rose was born December 7, 1915 in Rose Mower Tooele, Utah, the daughter of Sam and Mary Spatafore Granato. She married Clarence William Jones December 3, 1946; he preceded her in death on May 17, 1967. She married Dale Lorin Mower December 29, 1970; he preceded her in death on August 23, 1983. Rose was a member of the LDS Middle Fork Ward. She loved all kids but especially her grandkids. She enjoyed and was proud of her yard work; she also enjoyed crocheting, reading poetry, and embroidery work. Rose loved people and taking care of the “old” people in her neighborhood. Rose’s favorite job was being a loving mother but she also worked for HAFB driv- Obituaries Gethsemane Abbey in Kentucky and served his life as a Religious Brother as Father Baldwin at the Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Huntsville arriving here in the 1940s. He is survived by his wife Barbara; children Christine (Wendell) Neff of Ruby Valley, NV; Bob (Anna) Huddleston of Las Vegas, NV; Carol Widdison of Kaysville, UT; Marian (Shan) Hellstrom of N. Ogden, UT; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Marlan (Greta) Toombs of Logan and two sisters, Bevlyn (DeVon) Anderson of Las Vegas and Marie (Ken) Lindquist of Logan. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Robert, and step-son Bill. Funeral services were held January 2, 2010 at the Huntsville 2nd Ward Chapel. Interment in the Huntsville City Cemetery. She is also survived by her sister Eva Guarascio of Copperton, Utah. She was preceded in death by her husbands; 5 sisters and 3 brothers, John Frank, Joe, Katy, Teresa, Mary, Arlene, and Jane. Funeral services were held Friday, January 8, 2010 at the Middle Fork Ward, 6450 E. 1900 N., Eden, Utah. Interment, Washington Heights Memorial Park. The family would like to thank Kelly, Ann, and Julie and the staff of Applegate Hospice; the Quist’s, Bassett’s, and Argyle’s; and the Middle Fork Ward for the visits and Friday night meals. Dorothy Garner Shupe Felt Dorothy died December 31, 2009 in her home of natural causes. She was born July 1, 1922 in Perry, Utah, daughter of William Henry and Mary Emma Tolman Garner. She was Dorothy Felt the youngest of eleven children. On April 17, 1942 she married Ross A. Shupe in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died in March of 1976. She met later and married Leland R. Felt in January of 1979. He died in December of 2004. Dorothy was reared and educated in North Ogden, graduating from Weber High and attending some classes at Weber College. Dorothy lived most of her younger life in North Ogden, moving to Huntsville in 1959. Retiring after 27 years of service as a statistical assistant at the U.S. Forest Service’s Intermountain Forest Range Experiment Station, she was the author of numerous publications. She performed critical quality control checks for forest resource inventories in Utah, New Mexico, Montana, South Dakota, David Arnold Ferrin David Arnold Ferrin, 95, passed away peacefully at the Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah on December 27, 2009. David was born on February 8, 1914 in Liberty, Utah to Arthur David Ferrin Moroni and Janet Lindsay Ferrin. He later moved to Eden, Utah then Redrock, Montana, and finally settled in Logan, Utah. David graduated from Weber High School and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in art from Utah State University. He married Elda Lear on August 1, 1958 in the Logan LDS Temple. David loved art. His love of art began at an early age and continued throughout his life. As a boy he would draw pictures with colored chalk on the schools blackboards for holidays. While growing up in Eden, he watched sign painters painting a new sign on the side of the Eden General Store. He was so fascinated by this that he made up his mind right then and there that he was going to become a sign painter. During his college years he supported himself by working in the College Art Department. He also dressed windows at CC Andersons, Tingwalls Department Stores, and Allen’s Ladies Store. After graduating from college, David started his own business at 2nd North and Main. He later moved to Canyon road in Logan. He called his business Ferrin Signs and he continued working until his retirement in 1985. For these years he was known Byron Lee Whittemore, Jr. N. Ogden – Byron Lee Whittemore, Jr., 80, returned home for a joyous reunion with his loved ones on January 4, 2010. He was born March 1, 1929 in Ogden, Utah. He married the love of his Byron Whittemore life, Patricia Isis Raynor, on September 8, 1950. Together they walked through life, hand in hand, with an undeniable, everlasting love. He graduated from Ogden High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He attended Colorado A & M and the University of Utah. He had a long career at Hill Air Force Base where he retired as the Division Chief of Data Automation. He had a deep love and appreciation for the outdoors and a great passion for serving others. He gladly gave his time and leadership abilities to many organizations. He served as President of the Sunridge Property Owners Association, Commander of the Weber County Winter Search and Rescue, President of the Golden Spike Snowmobiling Association, State Representative for the and Idaho. Dorothy was a member of the Huntsville Second Ward and held many positions in the LDS church on a ward and stake level both in North Ogden and Huntsville. She was also a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Camp Olive. Flowers were her love, and she could be found from early spring until snowfall in her gardens. Her off-flower season hobby was crocheting. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husbands, Ross A. Shupe and Leland R. Felt; her son Curtis B. Shupe; her daughter Dara Garner Shupe Lucas; and six brothers and four sisters. Surviving Dorothy are her daughter Pamela (Bob) Hauck, seven special grandchildren, eighteen extra special great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at the Huntsville 2nd Ward Chapel. The family would like to thank all those who sat by Dorothy during her health crisis last winter, and also her niece Diana Dyrr for all of the service she has rendered over the last several years. David’s other great love was the outdoors. He loved sketching and photographing nature along with hunting and, most of all, fly fishing. Many of his late summer evenings were spent with his son David on one of the local rivers trying for that perfect cast and hoping to outsmart a wily old trout. These moments were some his happiest time of his life. David was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings. His favorite was serving as the Ward Clerk of the Logan 11th Ward. He served in this capacity for three Bishops. David was preceded in death by his wife, Elda Lear Ferrin, and all of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his three children: David Lear Ferrin (Kay-Lynne) of North Logan, LuAnn Ferrin of Logan, and Rosalie McKinnon (Morrell) of Ogden; three grandchildren, Katie Marie McKinnon, Branden David Ferrin, and Caden Jace Ferrin. Funeral services were held at noon on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Allen Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan, Utah. Internment in the Logan City Cemetery. He was one of the friendliest and most outgoing people there ever was. His family was always first in his life. He was a man of honor, integrity, understanding, compassion, and selfless love. He set a shining example for our family for generations to come. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; daughters Cathy Lindley and Linda Myers (Bill); son Clay Whittemore (Nancy); and 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the many loving caregivers from Ogden Regional, Bonneville Dialysis, Aspen Care Center, and Alpine Care and Hospice. Your light will shine on in our hearts forever.
