Letters to the Editor “Powderville” Resident Thanks Community for Their Support A huge, heartfelt “thank you” to the community from your neighbors in “Powderville.” The battle against Powder Mountain Town has felt like an uphill (pardon the pun) battle against a goliath. This past weekend at our Union Station fundraiser, we saw a full house, with people from all segments of our community. It was an emotional moment to see so many people taking a stand for us and for justice. Your continued support and interest in our progress is vital. This is an epic story! To see the timeline of events and to educate others on what’s happening, go to our website at www. powdermountaincitizensrights.org and also sign up for updates from the Ogden Valley blog <http://ogden-valley.blogspot.com> Again, THANK YOU! What a truly courageous community we live in! Deja Mitchell, Eden Thank You and More from the Fundraising Team The STOP Powder Mountain Town Incorporation effort passed a significant milestone. Generous residents of the area re-filled the home owners’ checking accounts so they can continue paying legal fees in the fight for civil rights. The residents and the committee of helpers offer their sincere thanks to everyone involved. Those who helped with the Fundraising Dinner and Show included Shades of Gray, Becky Mertlich, Paul Birkbeck (director) and the 18 cast members of the melodrama, and many others. Contributors for the November 13 event came from every corner of the Valley and many from the Ogden area as well. All are concerned that our friends should lose their right to vote on whether to be a town or not, or for those who would govern them if a new town were incorporated. Until the issue is resolved, there continues to be a need for funds, and contributions will be gratefully accepted by the Powder Mountain Citizens Rights Defense Group at: POWDER MOUNTAIN CITIZENS RIGHTS DEFENSE GROUP PO BOX 231 EDEN UT 84310 The appeal to the Utah Supreme Court has been filed and a stay requested. With the full participation of our local legislators, bills are being prepared for the upcoming legislative session that will also address the issues. We can ALL do something. We can continue to contribute, we can get our yard signs up and away from the coming snow banks, and we can see that new signs are in place. It is important that we all sign the new online petition (even if you signed a paper version) on the Valley Blog <http://ogden-valley. blogspot.com> Updates will be regularly posted on the www.powdermountaincitizensrights.com website as well. An excellent short DVD explaining the situation is available for $1.00, and can be picked up from the Eden Coffee and Cocoa shop. Steve Clarke, Eden Wonderful, Caring Community Is What Makes the Valley Unique—Thank you for your support Friday the 13th of November can be counted as a truly lucky day for Ogden Valley as citizens from every corner of Weber County joined together to raise funds for our neighbors caught in the Powder Mountain incorporation debacle. And the stars of the evening were all of the Valley performers who entertained us: Shades of Grey and their awesome sound man, Becky Mertlich on harp, and playwright Paul Birkbeck and his amazing cast of players. The original melodrama, written by Paul, was funny from the start but turned hilarious when Jed the town yokel’s buck teeth accidently flew out of his mouth and down onto the stage. He stooped down to grab them, grinned at the audience, and adlibbed, “The three sec- ond rule!” From there the play rollicked on to the absolute delight of the audience. The cast consisted of some seasoned actors and others who had never been on the stage before, all of whom gave up weekday evenings to rehearse. The scenery, the props, the costumes, and musical accompaniment were all donated by Valley artists. As entertainment chair for the event, I cannot thank everyone enough. You made the “FUN” in FUNdraiser! Thanks to the cast of the “Curse of the Powervillains”: Allie LaSalle, Dave Robinson, Mack Jenkins, Niki Spallino, Rex Harris, Tim Hansen, Tyson Baker, Pauline Maxwell, Andrew Primbs, John Wilson, Michelle Burnett, “Bargaining for Powder Mountain” Anyone who cares about Ogden Valley should read “Bargaining for Eden” by Stephen Trimble. It’s a fantastic story on how Snowbasin was developed just in time for the 2002 Winter Olympics. After 12 years of extreme opposition and controversy, the mountain was changed forever. The Olympics have come and gone. Skiing in Utah is no longer a secret and the Beehive state was left with the crown jewel of a ski resort. Earl Holding really did a nice job with the mountain and many people think of Snowbasin as a local treasure. Only time will tell if it is sustainable. Now we have another battle going on with Powder Mountain. Were any lesson learned from Snowbasin? Steve Timble sums it up best in the final paragraph of his book. “We call it paradise, this land of ours. We call it home. Like our nation, the West is in the middle of its arc. We must remain both vigilant and tender if we wish to preserve its authenticity. We can do this. We are not yet too old, too greedy, or too cynical to take wise action together.” Wouldn’t it be great if the owners of Powder Mountain, the Weber County Planning Commission, and the local community understood each other’s needs and Ogden Valley ended up with another crown jewel? Please read the book. Bruce Grandin, Eden Tyson Baker, Brittan Parkinson, Nicole Tisdale, Brielle Parkinson, Sophia Primm, and Angela Bulloch. Additional thanks to the support team; on keyboard, Dick Arbogast; set design, John Oliver; costumes and make-up, Star Primm; props, Steve and Linda Clarke, Dennis Maher, Elise Summers, Jennifer Sorensen, and Kathy Peterson; silent auction, Sheila Musante and Ulla Kauffman; cast support, Jody Smith. Congratulations to our wonderful community for caring. You are what makes our Valley unique. Sharon Holmstrom, Eden Inspirational Thought “You are your greatest investment. The more you store in that mind of yours, the more you enrich your experience, the more people you meet, the more books you read, and the more places you visit, the greater is that investment in all that you are.” - Norman Vincent Peale |
