Almost Alice: New illustrations of Wonderland by Maggie Taylor on Exhibit The Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah is pleased to announce its latest exhibition, Almost Alice: New Illustrations of Wonderland. The exhibition features work by artist Maggie Taylor, and will be on view August 24 through September 26, 2009. The exhibition has been organized by the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida, Gainesville, Tom Southall, Curator. “In recent years Maggie Taylor has emerged as one of the most accomplished and innovative masters of digital imaging processes. Taylor’s composite images give fresh insight as a new set of illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Using sources ranging from snapshots to 19th-century daguerreotypes and tintypes, she constructs fantastic, surreal nar- ratives. Although richly colored and dreamlike in appearance, her use of photographic sources and digital manipulation retains a sense of the original photographic veracity, thus adding to the images’ surreal power. Her digital transformations bring out the fantasy and fantastic that is at the heart of Carroll’s playfully ironic writing.” This exhibition is made possible through funds from the Browning Lead Trust, and through Weber County RAMP funds. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Carrera’s brilliantly colored work presents small jewels of urban life. Beginning with luscious paint and brushstrokes her work depicts the intimate pleasures of being alive: eating, drinking, dancing, working, and more. Born in 1972 in Ogden, she and her twin sister were raised by their father, who is also a painter. His work, however, addressed political themes of the times. She attended WSU in 1991, studying with Dale Bryner, Arthur Adelman, Angelika Pagel, and Mark Biddle. Next, she studied with Glen Edwards and graduated from Utah State University with a BFA in Illustration (1998) followed by an MFA in Illustration (2000). She states, “I have been painting representational figurative oil paintings for more than a decade and have been fortunate enough to paint what I most enjoy: the sensual and celebratory pleasures of life. My subjects include restaurant workers (most notably the historic Bluebird Restaurant in Logan, Utah), elegant women sipping spirits, Chicana themes, cigars, fine dining, parties, dancing, musicians, and other delights.” She has been represented by top galleries in the west including Meyer in Park City, Carnahan Gallery and Canyon Road Fine Art Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, Southam Gallery (SLC), and Wilkerson Gallery (Eden, UT). 20% OFF any $100 purchase with this coupon.
