Show Volume XVII Issue X The Ogden Valley news Page August 15, 2009 Announcements Obituaries Arthur G. Mumford Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend Arthur G. Mumford, age 90, died July 25, 2009 at an Ogden hospital of complications from injuries Arthur Mumford sustained in an autopedestrian accident suffered a week earlier. Art was born March 23, 1919 in Ogden, son of George A. and Millie Guiver Mumford. He was raised in Sunset and graduated from Davis High School. He received an associate degree in auto mechanics from Weber College. He served 4½ years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at Hill Air Force Base, retiring after 37 years of federal service. He married Florence Smith on August 21, 1942 in Huntsville. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. A master carpenter, family and friends felt Art’s love as he crafted fine furniture for their homes. He built a home in Sunset and managed a fruit and vegetable farm before moving to Huntsville in 1960. There, he built a home on five acres and never wanted to leave Ogden Valley. In the last years of his life, he found new purpose in assisting his son construct his home nearby. Betty Lou Koch Betty Lou Shaw Koch, age 79, of Paul, Idaho passed away at the Minidoka Care Center July 28, 2009 following a lengthy illness. She was born October 23, 1929 in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of Rosaline Betty Lou Koch Wilson and William Hubert Child Jr. The youngest of three children, she grew up in the Ogden area. She married Reed A. Shaw May 5, 1945 in Elko, Nevada. They made their home in Liberty, Utah where Reed farmed and spent many winters working in Ogden. They were blessed with four children: Steven Reed, William Hubert, Judy Marinda, and Eugene Leslie. In 1970 the family purchased a farm in Dietrich, Idaho. Reed passed away in 1982. Following Reed’s death, Betty moved to Paul, Idaho where she met and married Truman D. Koch in 1983 and moved to their current residence in Paul. His patience and encouragement helped many scouts, including his four sons, reach the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as financial clerk in his ward. Art served as captain in the Sons of Utah Pioneers. He also served as chapter president and state treasurer of the Good Sam RV Club. He worked as water master and secretary for the Huntsville Irrigation Company for many years. He loved the outdoors and could often be found camping, fishing, hunting, and boating with his family. Art truly lived the Golden Rule and his example inspired many others to do the same. He was active until the end of his life, even spending several days in elk camp last fall. He is survived by his wife, Florence, sons James (Kathy), Eagle, Idaho; Gary (Brenda), North Salt Lake; Rex (Debbie), Huntsville; and Scott (Doris), Grapevine, Texas; and daughter Julie (Brett) Wilding, Kaysville; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Jesse; and three sisters, Gladys, Edna, and Verda. Funeral services were held in the Huntsville LDS Chapel on Saturday, August 1. Interment in the Huntsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Union Station Foundation. Betty loved to watch her children and grandchildren participate in sporting activities. She was an avid bowler, liked to out-fish her husband, Truman, and travel to Jackpot, Nevada. She is survived by her husband, Truman Koch of Paul, ID; children William Hubert (Rita) Shaw and Eugene Leslie (Joyce) Shaw from Dietrich, ID; Judy Marinda (Lynn) Ballard from Ashton, ID; Deloy Koch from Boise, ID; Delno (Sandy) Koch from Burley, ID; Dennis (Diana) Koch from Murtaugh, ID; 23 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Reed Shaw, son Steven Reed, brother Eugene West, and sister Shirley Gard. She will be greatly missed as she brought much love and many blessing to her family. A service was held August 3, 2009, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Dietrich. Interment will follow at the Shoshone Cemetery. Wayne Lowder Wayne Lowder, 87, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 29, 2009. He was born September 7, 1921 in Huntsville, Utah to Ira Sylvester and Thersa Chadwick Lowder. Wayne served during Wayne Lowder WWII in the U.S. Marine Corps from May 26, 1942 until September 17, 1945, earning the Purple Heart. He married Ileen Birt on October 5, 1950 in the Logan LDS Temple. Wayne worked for Weber County Schools, and retired from Hill Air Force Base after 26 years of service as a jet electrician. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, and outdoorsman. He loved to work in Paul Whiteley Paul J. Whiteley, 62, died Monday, August 3, 2009 at his home in Huntsville. He was born October 22, 1946 in Ogden, a son of Harold J. and Hendrika Nellestein Whiteley. He was a member Paul Whiteley of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and had served a mission to England South from 1965 to 1967. He graduated from Bonneville High School and Weber State College with a BS degree in 1972. He also was a member of the Army Reserves. Paul was in the banking business for 28 years and had worked at the Bank of Utah, First Interstate Bank, and Key Bank.. He married Terry ReNee Garr in 1969. They were later divorced. In 2001 he then married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Stone. He enjoyed water skiing, gardening, Utah Jazz, and BYU sports. Surviving are his wife of Huntsville; six children, Jason A. (Denise) Whiteley, Clearfield; Brandon D. (Shannon) Whiteley, Kaysville; Marissa (Shane) Bassir, Payson; Krista N. Whiteley, Ogden; Brinn J. (Andrea) Whiteley, Ogden; Bretton J. Whiteley, Ogden; five step-children, Carl his yard and garden. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Wayne is survived by his wife, Ileen; two daughters, Charlene Lowder, Roy and Deborah (Blair) Gibson, Las Vegas, NV; three sons, Craig (Jean) Lowder, Azle, TX; Michael (Elizabeth) Lowder, West Valley, UT; and Rodney (Laura) Lowder, Riverton, UT. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Patterson, and two brothers, Jay Lowder and Doug Lowder. A special thank you to the nurses at Intermountain Hospice for their loving and dedicated care of Wayne. Funeral services were held Monday, August 3, 2009 at Lindquist Roy Mortuary, 3333 W. 5600 S., Roy, Utah. Internment at Lindquist Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., Ogden, Utah. (Teri) Whiteley, North Ogden; and 22 grandchildren. Graveside services were held Saturday, August 8, 2009, at the Liberty Cemetery, Utah.
