At the end of the three years he saw that he was out of time and resources, so instead of enrolling in the long years of engineering school, he earned his teaching degree, married, and now has been teaching elementary school for almost 20 years. Alberto saved money for many years so that he could build his own classroom with hollow block walls, a door that locked, windows with bars, and a roof that would not blow away with the next typhoon. He is hopeful that he can pass this classroom to his daughter when he retires as she has joined the teaching profession as well. While we were in the Philippines we helped Alberto buy a used computer. He is the only teacher out of about 700 in his district that has a computer. He explained Need help? that for $25,000 he could build a new wing onto his school that would house a library and resource center (no public schools in our entire area had a library) and new classrooms with electricity. We have obtained $7,000 towards our goal of $25,000, and hope to have the rest by the spring when the school closes for the hot season, and Alberto can start building full time. He will do much of the work himself with help from his family. He is very careful with donated money, and saves every receipt to verify all purchases and expenses. Alberto is a great teacher who is very concerned about the future of the children in this region. Here is an account of his dedication: Alberto’s daughter was expecting a baby and could not make the long journey to her school everyday so he traded his school for hers for the year. To get to the school he had to take a boat. When the weather was too severe for the boat trip, he would hike the two hours over the mountain in the rain to reach the school. The school did not have electricity so he ran a wire to his classroom. Before he brought electricity to the school, the children could not see their papers in the dark, so they would practice dancing and singing until the sun came out again. With donated money, Alberto was able to run wires to the other classrooms so they now have lights as well. Alberto has drawn up the plans for the new addition to his school. He took the drawings to the city fathers and they were so impressed that they said that they would try to match any donated funds that he could come up with. All donations are tax deductible by sending them to: THE UNITED WAY OF NORTHERN UTAH C/O BEN JOHNSON 2955 HARRISON BLVD OGDEN UT 84403 Come visit our newly expanded Eden store and talk to one of our friendly, helpful staff.
