Ogden City’s Christmas Village lights up downtown Ogden with its magnificent lights every year from the Saturday after Thanksgiving through January 1. Come to the Village and you will find yourself in a dazzling winter wonderland set a glow with Christmas lights. Adding to the magnificent beauty is the unique setting of cottages located in the park for everyone to enjoy. Each cottage has its own theme and is modeled after Santa’s North Pole Village, or longstanding Ogden businesses or landmarks. Since its beginning, Christmas Village has grown to a mammoth and extraordinary seasonal attraction drawing visitors from great distances as well as from its local families who have made visiting Christmas Village part of their annual Christmas tradition. The magnificent display attracts thousands of tourists each year who come to view the Christmas lights and cottages. The idea for the Christmas Village began in December of 1961. The Green family—Jerry, Maxine, and 5-year-old Tommy—were standing in the most perfect spot for the Ogden’s annual Christmas parade. The parade started with screaming CHRISTMAS A Nativity scene in front of the St. Florence Catholic Church in Huntsville. Yes! Bus ser7.2 vice for Valley residents was canceled in 7.3 November 2001. UTA says service was DIGITAL TV cont. on page 12 canceled due to both low ridership levels 2.1 KUTV, the CBS station in Salt Lake City and the costs associated with servicing a more rural area. Suggestions for a revised route that would be more cost effective could include an option for service to one centralized location, such as Eden, with a Park and Ride facility. A plan like this would cut down costs to service Valley residents because the bus wouldn’t have to circle all the way around Pineview, saving time and resources. Another possibility would be for more trips in the morning and evening hours than previously offered by UTA, providing greater flexibility and getting more riders to use the route. A third option could be operating a proposed route utilizing vans until ridership or interest grows in Shown above, but not in order, are wrestlers Porter Pilkington, Jonathon McKinney, Lee order to justify a larger vehicle. By Kellie Woolsey Student Reporter This year we had a great wrestling team. The boys competed against six other elementary schools at Weber High. Valley Elementary won the tournament by a large margin. On November 25 Coach Warren, Weber High School’s head coach, presented the Valley boys with the tournament trophy. This trophy is a “traveling” trophy—the school that wins the tournament gets to display it in their school for a year. Recently the boys competed in the Northern Regional Tournament at Weber High School. There were over 1,000 wrestlers that competed—wrestlers from Davis County to Cache Valley. First place wrestlers in the tournament were Blake Woolsey, Porter Pilkington, Jonathon McKinney, Lee Woolsey, Jake Woolsey, Landon Ashment, Jackson Jenkins, Dillon Christensen, Garret Christensen, and Heston Woolsey. Second place wrestlers were Daxton Spainhower, Taggart Nielsen, Jacob Tidwell, and Tristen McClure. Third place wrestlers were Ashton Johnson, Jace Velasquez, Zachary McKinney, David Richardson, Dallas Spainhower, and Kolon Jenkins, with Joey Gerhlein placing fourth. We are proud of all of the boys who wrestled, and look forward to another great season next year. All the money donated for the tree went to a program for students with disabilities in the Weber and Ogden School Districts. We were pleased to help these students. We were also so happy when we learned that our tree brought in $1,700. Our tree was named StarryStarry Night. It was stuffed with blue and snowy white decorations. Silver stars had love, peace, hope, and faith engraved on them. It looked exactly what you imagine a Christmas night should look like with snowflakes gliding down through the sky. We would like to thank everyone who donated decorations, including the beautiful nine-foot tree and accessories from Cal and Kathy Welling. Special thanks to Kyrie and Rachel Nielson, Thatcher and Tessa Bailey, Carson and Robyn Clark, Ethan and Emily Fuller, Ty and Kathy Nelson, and Madison and Lorie Hogge for all their time and energy.
