Show Volume XV Issue IX The Ogden Valley news Page 13 April 15, 2008 Growing Population Strains West’s Square Foot Gardening Components Wilderness—State of the Rockies report says share Available at Fundraising Event of public lands per capita down 18 percent in seven years As the eightstate Rocky Mountain West’s population booms, its remaining wildlands are decreasing quickly and are under pressure for increased uses, according to the Colorado College 2008 State of the Rockies Report Card, released April 7, 2008. Nowhere in the country is the management of wildlands more contentious than in the Rocky Mountain West, as interests compete for land use ranging from unbridled development to unconditional preservation. The region, with a population growth of more than 14 percent between 2000 and 2006, is the fastest-growing in the country. The fifth annual Colorado College State of the Rockies Report Card is a 120page culmination of months of research and writing by a team of Colorado College undergraduate students. Each year, a new team of student researchers studies different key issues affecting the Rocky Mountain region, which is comprised of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. “Wilderness and Extractive Industries: An Economic Transition in the Rockies,” was written by student researcher Brandon Goldstein. Though the Rockies economy is evolving away from resource extraction such as harvesting timber and mining for metals, oil, and gas, the region’s burgeoning population puts increasing demands on the resources of these wildlands. High population densities increase the demand for natural resources such as water, oil, and natural gas. Greater numbers of hikers and campers cause noticeable impacts from increased use of roads, trails, and campsites. Among the key findings of the “Wilderness and Extractive Industries” report: • With population increase, the share of public lands per capita decreased almost 18 percent from 15 acres per person in 1999 to 12 acres in 2006. • Nevada and Arizona, the two fastestgrowing states in the nation, experienced a decrease in public lands per capita of more than 20 percent. • More than 107 million acres of wilderness are protected within the National Wilderness Preservation System, the majority of which is located in the western U.S. and Alaska. • At least 58 million acres of these wildlands are in the eight-state Rockies region, and a considerable portion of this land has an uncertain future that could result in either development or preservation. • From 1999 to 2006, the Rocky Mountain West experienced population growth about 100 times greater than the acreage of federally designated land. • The supporting industries of the Old West economy are giving way to new emerging Western economies: food, health, technology, legal, entertainment, technical, financial, transportation, administrative, and recreation services. Greater population stresses a variety of systems: • More water is removed from rivers, reservoirs, and lakes, which impacts wildlife, fisheries, and watersheds • Higher power use creates demand for more power-generation facilities • The increased density of backcountry roads and trails affects the landscape • Sediments are deposited into rivers and watersheds • The risk of human-caused forest fires increases The report also rates how "wild" every county in the region is. Before grading, the Rockies’ counties were sorted by population and geography as either "metropolitan," "micropolitan" or "rural." The theme of this year’s meeting is “The Military and Frontiers,” and will highlight the military’s role in geographic, technological, political, social, and other frontiers. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Rick Atkinson will deliver the banquet address on April 19. He will speak about his recently released book The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 19431944. The meeting, which will be held at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center, will offer more than 50 sessions on various subjects relating to military history. More than 300 SMH members from around the world will attend the meeting, and more than 160 members will participate on the various panels. The SMH, which was established in 1933, now has a membership of 2,300, including many of the world’s most prominent scholars, historians, serving officers, policy makers, and others interested in military history. The SMH publishes the Journal of Military History, the leading scholarly journal on military history.
