HCR 843A0, Charter School Organizers Still Hopeful About Status of Application Compiled by Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News On August 17, Valley residents Stephanie Wilkins, Deborah Mortensen, and Elizabeth Roberts, who have been pursuing the development ofa charter school in Ogden Valley, traveled to Salt Lake City to hear the decision of the state Charter School Board on which applicants received approval to proceed with establishing charter schools within the state. Before the results of the board decision were announced, the board explained that there were three categories the board was deciding on in which to place applications: Nv 1. Thee schools that oo immediately be granted a charter An additional four ‘schools that, in a normal year, would be granted a charter, but because of a moratorium or cap on the number of schools set by the Utah legislature, their status is currently temporarily on CHARTER Preparing for lift-off in the morning air of Ogden Valley. Heritage Foundation Annual Fundraising House Tour Highlights Ogden Valley Homes and Businesses The Weber County Heritage Foundation’s 29th Annual House Tour will be held September 9, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The tour will highlight homes and businesses located throughout Ogden Valley and Ogden Canyon. Tickets are $10, and are available at the Eccles Community Art Center in Ogden or Planet Rainbow at the mouth of Ogden Canyon. On the day of the tour, tickets will also be available along the route and at the Huntsville Park. This annual house tour is the primary fundraiser for the Weber County Heritage Foundation. Also available will be the Foundation’s calendar of events for the year. All proceeds are used to preserve and rehabilitate historic architecture in Weber County. In 1890 it was Ogden Canyon’s Hot Springs, then Ogden Canyon Sanitarium, in 1928 El Monte, and now Rainbow Gardens. Lime Kiln (poi) - Ogden Canyon. In 1865, James Moroni Thomas constructed his second Lime Kiln. Lime was sold to early pioneers to plaster and whitewash their homes. The Oaks (poi) gden Canyon. The building changed hands a few times HERITAGE TOUR cont. on page 13 Accidents Keep Sheriff’s Office Busy By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Two auto accidents in one week kept Weber County Officers busy. On Tuesday, Nissan Xterra Mountain Championship By Kera Erickson The Nissan Xterra Mountain Championship was held at Pineview Reservoir and Snowbasin Ski Resort on August 19, 2006. The Nissan Xterra is an off-road triathlon that is one of five National Championship Series races oe to the nationals held at Lake Tahoe, Nev: The competitors were ae into three pina groups. The first group was the pro who were competing for the ultimate change to win $20,000. The second group of racers battled towards a slot to make it to the World Championship that will be held in Makena, Maui. A shorter, half-distance version of the race, known as the Xterra Sport division, was provided for beginner or ama- teur athletes The championship race started at Pineview Reservoir where competitors completed a 1.5k swim. The athletes then ran up the beach and quickly transitioned onto their mountain bikes. They had a 30k bike ride up Wheelers Canyon and then up single track trails towards Snowbasin Ski Resort. They then traded in their bike shoes for running shoes and completed al 0k trail run. he Xterra Sport Race followed the same basic course, but racers were challenged to a shorter version witha 750m swim, 16k bike ride, and 5k trail run. All athletes completed the race at Snowbasin Ski Resort. Pro racer Mike Vine of Victoria, Canada had the fastest race time for the Mountain Championship Race. He completed the offroad triathlon in 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 30 seconds. The fastest woman was pro racer Melanie McQuaid of Victoria, Canada. McQuaid completed the race in 2 hours, 43 minutes, and 19 seconds. She is a two time Xterra World Champion, winning the 2003 and XTERRA cont. on page 9 No one seriously injured in accident on North Ogden Divide on August 24. August 22, 19 year Alexandra Boone of Liberty, distracted while driving, ran into the rear end of a 2003 Jeep Cherokee driven by Bev Wadman of Eden. The Eden woman had stopped, as instructed by a construction flagger, in front of Snowcrest Jr. High on Highway 162 where new asphalt was being laid. After impact, the westbound 1996 Ford Taurus driven by Boone veered off the left hand shoulder of the highway and came to rest after hitting a tree. Both women were checked by emergency medical personnel who arrived on the scene, and were released. The airbag on the Ford Taurus deployed causing minor injuries to Boone. On Thursday, August 24, 29 year old Corey Schneider of N. Ogden totaled the 2003 Subaru he was driving after losing control of ACCIDENTS cont. on page 10 Volunteers Needed for Clean Up Efforts Darrell G Eddington, Utah State Univ Lower Weber River Watered “oordindter The third annual Pineview Reservoir clean up and semi annual Ogden Canyon clean up is slated for September 9, 2006 beginning at 8:00 a.m. and lasting until approximately 12:00 noon with lunch being served at Anderson Cove at 11 _ a.m. There will also be a drawing for pri ze: Participation in this event is — definitely in the best interest of everyone who drinks water! Because of the success from the first two years of this event, there has been a reduced trash load at the water treatment center. It has also contributed to the overall beauty of the environment for visitors, as well as those who reside in the Ogden Valley. Youth and adults from various religious and civil organizations are highly encour- aged to come out and participate. This is definitely a great way to accumulate some service project hours! Please report at Anderson Cove located on the south side of the reservoir to obtain your assignment areas, trash bags, rubber gloves, and bottled water. It is recommended that participants come dressed and equipped appropriately i.e. long pants, covered toed shoes, hats, and sunscreen. Organizers are still in need of help from boat owners who may have bass-type, open bow boats that can help ferry trash across the water to various drop off sites for pick up If you are interested in focusing your clean up efforts in Ogden Canyon, please meet at the Alaskan Inn at 9:00 a.m. Canyon volunteers will meet up at Anderson Cove for lunch and drawings at 11:00 a.m. For more information, please contact Darrell Eddington at 845-4026.
