Show vowmest me’ "AE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS May Slowing U.S. Economic Growth and Rising Short-term Interest Rates Will Modestly Impact Weber County Small Businesses As a result, slowing U.S. economic growth and rising short-term interest rates are negative contributors to the Index. UTAH EMPLOYMENT The Utah unemployment rate—the most heavily weighted component of the Zions Bank Small Business Index for Utah—was estimated at 4.8% in the latest month, unchanged from the prior month’s rate. The current 4.8% rate compared to a jobless rate of 5.3% during the same month one year ago. A lower Utah unemployment rate is a negative contributor to the Index as it implies decreased access to Utah labor. Revised data shows that Utah’s me ment rate averaged 5.2% in 2004, 5.7% in and in 2002, and 4.4% in 2001. By compan, the 3.4% average during 2000 was one of the lowest annual rates since the early 1950s. These rates compare to an average Utah employment rate of 5% between 1995 and 199! ‘otal Utah employment rose by an estimated im 300 jobs (up 3.7%) over the past 12 months, of the strongest annualized gains in eight ears. This rise compares to a revised gain of 40,800 jobs in the prior year over-year period. Why individuals who have a mental illness are so prone to abuse alcohol and other drugs is a matter of controversy. Some researchers believe that substance abuse may precipitate mental illness in vulnerable individuals, while others believe that people with psychiatric disorders use alcohol and other drugs in a misguided attempt to alleviate symptoms of their illnesses or side effects from their medications. The evidence is most consistent with a more complex explanation with such factors as poor cognitive function, anxiety, deficient interpersonal skills, social isolation, poverty, and lack of structured activities, whic mbine to make people with mental Tessas canticulity vulnerable to alcohol and drug abuse. The U.S. economy grew at a 3.1% real annual pace in 2005’s first quarter, below expectations. Forecasts for growth over the balance of the year are near a 3.5% real growth rate, with similar growth expected in 2006. While such U.S. growth is solid, it remains below the 4.5% real annualized growth rate during the 18-month period ending in December 2004, the strongest 18month growth pace in 20 years. oe e same time, rising inflationary pressures an economy will lead to additional abe tightening by the Federal Reserve over the balance of 2005.
