The Scoop on Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) works. Consumers pay one up WEBER ATHWAYO} Open VALLEY CHAPTER front fee to a farmer and receive a weekly box of freshly harvested produce in return. In other words CSA members essentially purchase in advance a “share” of the crops produced by the farmer that season. Jeremy East of East Farms in Bonn spoke to the group about his farm and the CSA seaarms is a family ee ee operated farm. They currently farm over 150 acres of vegetables and fruit. Everything in the CSA share is grown to meet Organic Standards. The CSA program will run for 20 weeks, starting about the 2nd week in June and continuing until Mid-October. Produce will be picked each Monday morning and delivered to Ogden Valley that afternoon. The drop off point will be central to all area members. At this point it looks like it will be in Eden. Members can purchase a 2 share, which is equivalent to 2 bushel per week and feeds 2-3 people. The cost for a 2 share is $170 for the season. That averages out to about $8 per week. Full shares are $340, about | bushel, and will feed 4-6 people. The contents of the box will change as the season sses. For example, springtime will have spring greens, peas, beets and green onions, whereas fall would have items such as beans, winter squash, pumpkins, potatoes and apples. ast Farms carries a wide variety of produce. They are growing more than 80 produce items including many different varieties such as of five different types of tomatoes and 8 types of peppers etc. They will also be offering melons, peaches, plums, cherries and apples. They have three "fel days where you can bring the family: Transplanting, Tomato Days, and Pumpkin Harvest. Teams of 12 runners will compete in the 170-mile relay race beginning June 17, 2005 at Hardware Ranch near Logan, Utah and finishing on June 18 at the City Park in Park City, Utah. Team members will run three legs of the race varying from 3 to 7 miles each. Most teams should complete the race within approximately 24 hours. Oo deadline for team registration is May 31, 2004. This year participation is limited to 100 teams. The Wasatch Back Relay traverses the backside of the Wasatch Mountain Range passing seven beautiful Utah lakes, several scenic mountain towns, and some of the most breathtaking scenery h has to offer. Though physically demanding, the race allows a diversity of ale ee from seri ous competitive runners to casual recreation- al joggers. The race will traverse Avon Pass, then wind through Liberty, Eden, and Huntsville then cross over Trapper’s Loop. Each team has 12 people and 91 teams have already registered. Wasatch Back Relay has grown rapidly in size and popularity. In its second year the Wasatch Back Relay has grown from 260 to ,320 participants. BackRoad Events President Steve Hill commented on the reason for this growth. “The Wasatch Back Relay is an incredible experience for several reasons. First, it is challenging and provides a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Second, it offers participants a great opportunity to hang out with and enjoy their friends.
