Driving down a stretch of road bordered by farms, homes, and fields, a dark shape suddenly darts into the road. You brake, swerve, and breathe a sigh of relief. The dog saunters off into the darkness and you shake your head, wondering at the carelessness of pet owners. This is a scenario all too common in Ogden Valley, despite a well known and enforced leash law for all dogs in Weber County. Shannon Werny, an adoption specialist with Weber County Animal Services, says that every month they pickup about five dogs unleashed in Ogden Valley, most of them in the unincorporated areas of Liberty and Eden. Those four footed friends with registration tags or microchips have an 85% chance of being reclaimed by their owners. Those dogs picked up without identification have only a 10% chance of returning home. While it is a law that all dogs in Weber County must be registered once they reach four months of age, many are not. “People think because they live in the country that they can just open up their back door and let their dogs out to go to the bathroom,” Shannon says. “However, they should remember that for every dog that we GALLERY $10 for a sterilized dog and $20 for an unsterilized dog. If you suspect your dog is loose or has been picked up by Animal Services, please call Weber County Animal Services at 3998244. This larger space allows the artists to show more of their work and includes an upstairs library. The library’s art books were donated by Sally Arway from the personal library of her husband Robert who passed away in March of 2004. While Animal Services claims that they have very few loose dogs reported in Huntsville, they are most frequently called to the South and North Fork areas of Liberty. The law in Weber County states that your dog may be unleashed on your own private property while under direct visual supervision as long as they are responding to “voice control” or are within a fenced area on your property. However, the moment your pet steps off your private property unleashed, they can be subject to impoundment by Animal Services. Getting Fido back is an expensive and involved undertaking. You will be charged a $45 impoundment fee plus a $10 a day kenneling fee. If your dog is not registered when impounded, you will be required to register them once you have identified them at the shelter. License fees are Donate Your Old Cell Phone and Help Our School!
