One hundred and thirty-thre- e fire departments in Utah have received a share of 5760,000 from the BLM as part of a new initiative to increase firefighting capabilities and interagency fire assis-jane- f. Each fire department received to $20,000 with a 10 percent up matching fund required. This is a significant new program that has already reached rural fire departments in Utah desperately in need of protective clothing, training, wildland fire equipment, and more.' said Sheldon Wimmer. BLM State fire management officer. "Rural fire departments are often the first line of defense in wildland situations and are depended upon by the BLM to get to fires quickly. Working togeth er with the BLM and other federal and state agencies, this money makes a team effort even more possible." The money was requested by the Western Governors Conference after the devastating fires in the summer of 2000 and allocated by Congress as part of a 510,000.000 package to strengthen fire fighting forces and initial attack capabilities. That effurt worked this year as the BLM in Utah experienced 548 fires with 31.683 acres burned, as compared to last years 678 fires and 1 50.540 acres burned. The fire assistance money significantly helped reduce the acres burned by increasing firefighting forces to almost 300 firefighters, two additional helicopters. and increased training for local fire departments.
