Show The Summit May 4, 2001 Bee Page B5 The Northeast Sterling Scholars competition was held Monday. Apnl 23, at Uintah High School in Vernal. After an early start with a full day of judging portfolios, interviewing candidates and critiquing performances in dance, music, computer expertise and speechdrama, the judges chose a Sterling Scholar winner and two runnersup in fourteen categories: English, Dance, Music, Social Science, SpcechDrama, Technology Education, Mathematics. Visual Arts, Family Consumer Sciences, Foreign Language, Science, Business & Marketing. Computer Technology, and General Scholarship. Fourteen schools were presented and entered their finest students in each category: South Summit, Uintah, Morgan, Wasatch, North Summit, Rich, Tabiona, Duchesne, Union, Wendover. Dugway, Grants vi He, Pail City, and Altamont Competition was at its finest and decisions were difficult to make because all who participated were outstanding in their area. Winners from South Summit wereJennifer Evans Sterling Scholar in Music, Jennifer Powell, Sterling Scholar in Family and Consumer Science, Matthew Glade, runner-u- p in Science, Cami Sorenson, runner-u-p in Foreign Language, and Kaisi Edward runner-u- p in Visual Arts. The outstanding candidates from South Summit High w ere: Cami Sorenson Foreign Language Sterling Scholar Runner-u- p Kaisi Edwards Visual Arts Sterling Scholar CAMI SORENSON is the daughter of Robin and Rodney Sorenson of Oakley. Cami has taken two years of Russian and three years of Spanish. She has taught Russian to four classes at the South Summit Elementary School. She earned a Gold Medal in the National Russian Essay Contest 2000. received the International Foreign language Award in 2001, Received first place in the Russian Conversation category and an excellent rating in the Poetry category at die State Russian Foreign Language Fair in 2001. e member of the Cami was a International Children's Choir for eight years and a member of Tapestry at South Summit High. She is a 3 year member of the National Honor Society. Interact Service Club, the Governor's Youth Council and an officer of the Future Business Leaders of America. She has sung in over thirty foreign tongues and has traveled to Austria., the Czech Republic. Germany. Hungary. Israel. Jordan. Poland, and Russia. KAISI EDWARDS is the daughter of Becky and Wade Edwards of Oakley. She participated in the Summit County Fair and won the Judges Choice award for pencil drawing. She received Honorable Mention for watercokv painting in the school art show, and Honorable Mention for photography in the Summit County Farm Bureau Bam Contest. Kaisi has taught an to a fourth grade class at South Summit Elementary School, is in the piocess of creating a Children's An Book, and created and found a sponsor for a community coloring contest. Kaisi is a teacher's assistant at the South Summit Elementary School, a retirement home volunteer. Captain of the Varsity Girls Soccer team, a varsity cheerleader, and first attendant to the Runner-u- p SI FAR LA JLNSI'S is the Jennifer Evans Musk Sterling Scholar Winner JENNIFER EVANS, daughter of Tim and Melissa Evans of Oakley, has been the principal Cellist of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony and Philharmonic for S years. She has been in performances in Carnegie Hall and Europe. She is also a member of the Tapestry Choir at South Summit and has won many music awards fur cello solos, vocal solos, and vocal ensembles. She is proud of her international music involvement. She has organized and participated in music and cultural sharing for humanitarian expeditions to Kenya. Africa Cello performances, Italy. Austria and Switzerland. Jennifer has been a studentbody Historian, class secretary. Interact Club President, FBLA Historian. Russian Club Officer. Mock Trial Team, and Utah Youth Summit Team Leader. She has participated in Humanitarian Service Expeditions to Peru, Bolivia, and Africa helping to build schools, providing health training and medical clinics and organizing cultural exchange activities. Her expertise in this field have been in table setting contests, short term live-i- n childcare for two families, redecorating a room in her home, personal clothing management, employment in a clothing care industry, and money with a checking management account, certificates of deposit, strong mutual funds, and savings bonds. Heather is a member of Tapestry, the seminary council, 4-club work, president of the Family, Leaders of Career, Consumer America, a county fair participant, church youth leader and has toured Washington D.C., Korea. Sweden, and Mexico. He has never earned less than an N' in a science class, served as the sixth grade Science Fair Judge, and is the top Physics and Chemistry Student, Matthew is a member of Tapestry. President of the Seminary Council, a member of the National Honor Society, an Eagle Scout, member of the Student Court. Senior Boy's Chairman of Entertainment, and fur three years has been on the High Honor Roll. include replacing an engine in his Toyota Corolla, welding numerous projects using different methods of welding, attending Engineering State and learning to use the AutoCAD. He has made numerous projects out of wood using various machine and is proficient in using Photoshop, Media Forge, and PowerPoint. David nas been a member of FFA and was the FFA Star Green Hand runner up. He is an Eagle Scout with a Bronze Palm and is the Senior Class Representative for the National Honor Society.
