Show Page A7 The Summit County Bee May 4, 2001 Happy 40th Birthday To Wasatch Mountain State Park Buck in May of 1961, the Stale legislature and the local community created Wasatch Mountain State Park consisting of 23.000 acres. Over the past 40 years literally millions of visitors have hiked, camped, explored and golfed on the Park's property. . Friends of W'asatch Mountain Stale Park is inviting it's members and the public to join in the parks 40th birthday celebration on Saturday. May 12. There will be a variety of fun events going on all day at Wasatch Mountain Stale Park's Visitor Center. For example, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., a continental breakfast will be available for volunteers who will take pan in the Friends Third Annual Spring Clean with the llamas. At 9 a.m.. we begin our spring cleaning by grabbing trash bags, splitting up into groups and venturing up into Snake Creek Canyon and Pine Canyon Road collecting all the wonderful treasures that have accumulated along the roadside. The groups should be back to the Visitor Center by noon. From 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.. a $3 BBQ luncheon will be served, along with beverages and free birthday cake. During this time, there will be a miniature motorized train offering free rides lo kids and adults sponsored by the Heber Valley Railroad, a hot air balloon will he. on display sponsored by Wasatch Ballooning, free fishing in the pond located behind the Visitor Center, and free outdoor musical entertainment performed by the Uinta Serenade. At 2 p.m.. an educational program with live birds will be presented by two Jordanclle State Park rangers who are Hawk Watch volunteers. Then, there will be a three mile guided hike, leaving from the Visitors Center, from 3 p.m. to S p.m., lead by Wasatch Mountain State Park's naturalist Becky Ottley. What a great way to spend a Saturday at the park whether it be for an hour or all day. Join Friends of Wasatch Mountain State Park in celebrating the parks 40th biithday. Summer at Sundance Begins on May 18 As Sundance changes from a white covering to a green and vibrant landscape, the date of May 18. has been set as the official openmouning of summer for tain biking, hiking and sightseeing, horseback riding and the Art Shack. With the May 18 opening. Sundance will be the first operation ooen for the season. Mountain Biking and Hiking The same terrain that makes skiing and snowboarding at Sundance so incredible also makes for some truly amazing mountain hiking, with more than 25 miles of single and double track, including the new Archie's Loop on the back mountain. Ray's lift will he open for mountain bikers and hikers daily from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. ueathcr permitting. Mountain biking area use fee is SIS for a day pass. SI 2 for a halfday pass (which starts at 2:30 p.m.) and $6 for a twilight pass (which starts at 4:30 p.m.). All passes include unlimited use of Ray's trail and lift system. A trails only" pass is S6 and includes one ride on Ray's lift. A season pass is SI 60. and a season trails only" pass is SI 00.
