Officials with the Utah Division ivf Wildlife Resources and the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food are happy to report that deer and elk in Utah are free of the disease. Based on two years of extensive surveys, we are confident that we do not have it in the wild in Utah." said Alan Clark. Wildlife Section chief for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. CWD is a disease that affects a small percentage of wild deer and elk in southeastern Wyoming and northeastern Colorado. It also has been found in privately-owne- d elk herds in Colorado. Montana. Nebraska, Oklahoma. South Dakota and Saskatchewan, Canada. The disease is fatal to deer and elk that contract it There is no evidence, though, of humans ever contracting or dying from CWD. The World Health Organization (WHO) in summarized its findings December 1999 with the following statement: There is currently no evidence that Chronic Wasting Disease in is transmitted to Cervidae humans... CWD Surveys Samples collected from more than 760 deer and elk in 1998 and 1999 show that Utah's w ild deer and elk ate free of the disease. The 1998 statew ide survey was conducted by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDW'R) and the Utah Department of Agticultute and Food. A total of 1 54 brain samples from SO deer and 74 elk wcie collected from animals hunters had taken that fall. These animals came from 20 of Utahs 29 counties. CWD w as not found in any of the samples. In 1999, a second, more intensive survey was conducted aficr a hunter from Kaysville was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jako- b disease, a disease in humans that is similar to CWD in animals. The U.S. Department of and the Utah Agriculture Department of Health joined the UDW'R and the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food in this effort, which was funded by the USDA at the request of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. Even though no evidence exists to show any link between the two diseases, as a safeguard an extensive CWD survey was still done. The survey was statewide, with emphasis in the counties where the young man hunted. An additional 607 deer and elk were surveyed. CWD was not found in any of them. Afier the 1998 and 1999 surveys, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food declared Utah free of CWD. mals that appear to be healthy and. if they kill an animal that appears not to be healthy, to contact us," Clark said. We did not find it." said Dr. I:.arl Rogers, assistant state veterinarian with the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. Clark said additional statewide surveys like those in 1998 and 1999 are n)t planned at this time but sampling of deer and elk that exhibit any disease-lik- e symptoms continues. This type of specific, targeted sampling has been done in Utah for many years, with tests for CWD administered since 1998. This target sampling has also failed to turn up any signs of CWD in Utah. "People in the two states where it occurs in the wild have told us that targeted sampling is the first place we would find it, so that's why it's sir important that we continue with that type of sampling," Clark said. Advice W'hile surveys show CWD isn't present in Utah, Clark still encourages people to call the UDW'R if they see any deer or elk that have an unhealthy appearance or exhibit symptoms, such as stumor trembling. bling There are other infections, diseases and parasites that wildlife can have and so we encourage people, if they're hunting, to only shoot ani HIGH COUNTRY PROPERTIES 435-336-59- 81 TTd Sdbsorlilb SmmmU Cotavity .Ji I : 19. p.m., Vernal City Otliccs. 447 F.
