Wildcat Football Captures Region Crown Student Writer: TYavis Milier and Staff Going into Fridays game against the Gunnison Bulldogs, die Wildcats of South Summit knew that they Controlled their own destiny. Win the game, and they were the region champs, losd and they would have to depend on someone else to lose. The Cats took the challenge and controlled their own outcome. The Cats opened the game with a bang as Audy Smoot gave himself a great birthday present by returning the opening kickoff 80 yards. He then booted the extra point to put the Cats up, 7-- 0. The Cats took the early lead and never looked back. The team has been kind of slow getting the offense started and so they had set a goal to try and score 21 points in the fust quarter. The kickoff return put them well on their way to reaching their goaL The Cats defense held die Dogs on their fist possession and forced a punt. On the next offensive series, the Cats offense was on a toll as tight end Gary Ricfains took a hand off on the reverse and rambled 60 yards for a score. Smoot booted die extra point, and die Cats were up 14--0. The defense continued to stop the Dogs and the Cats continued to run on offense. Brody Lewis scored next as he bowled his way past and over many defenders on the way to his 60 yard touchdown run. The extra point kick was good and the Cats had met their goal of scoring 21 points in the first quarter. The second quarter seemed a bit of a let down, as neither team was able 21-- 0 tO'Seore, leaving die Cats ahead at the half. The Cats defense decided to take over in the third quarter! Audy Smoot had more to celebrate as he intercepted a pass and returned it for a score. Chills went through the team as they were announced. The Ladycats knew that it would be lough, but they knew with out a doubt they were the best team. The first game started off great with the lead with the Cats kept passing setting, and killing the ball to Enterprise. The Ladycats wanted it so bad, they kept fighting and they soon The secended the first game ond game the Ladycats were not playing as well as they knew it' would take to win the game. Enterprise pulled it together beating the Ladycats with the score of 1. The crowd went wild and the Ladycats found themselves crying with tears of joy. They had taken a huge step that would take them up the ladder to get them ready for the State Finals. Beaver was ready to play, but the Lady cats would not be stopped. The Cats seemed to do everything right and nothing seemed to be out of order for the girls. With Natasha Mitchell's great assists, the hits would keep the Ladycats on offense beating Millard 13-- 3. The second game was a little tougher with the big blocker from Millard nuking a large obstacle. But soon the Ladycats would once again finding the holes and sending the 1. 5. Swimming Starts With a Splash! Student Writer: Sharia Jensen used to. Some realized that they have talent in other areas, and will try to improve in them. Some realized just the opposite, and they will stick with the races that they are familiar with. Although most of us just goofed around and had fun with it, our coach got quite dispirited when it was over. Coach Leigh Perry is from Park City, and we are confident that she will really make a difference in our performance. Last Wednesday. Oct. 18, the South Summit Swim Team had their first meet of the year. However, it was only an intersquad meet, so some of die experienced swimmers felt that it didn't really matter. The main purpose for having an intersquad meet was to give our coach an idea of where everybody was at in their racing abilities, and so she would know where we needed to work the most We also have many new swimmers joining us this year, and this meet helped them better understand how it feels to be at an actual competition. Many swimmers, already accustomed to the i tress of a swim meet, just went out and swam and had fun.
