The aim of these evaluations is to find out if people are being exposed to hazardous substances and. if so, whether that exposure is harmful and should he stopped or reduced. ISR is an old. reclaimed mine, mill and smelter located approximately 2.5 miles northeast of Tooele, near Lincoln Copper and lead smelting was conducted between 1910 and 1972 that resulted in e'evated levels of arsenic, lead and cadmium in the soil. The site scheduled to be officially added to the National IVioritics List on July 27, 2000. The assessment provides specific soil composition readings, maps, conclusions, etc. The assessment also includes a public health action plan designed to mitigate and prevent adverse human health effects resulting from exposure to hazardous substances in the environment. Recommendations have been made for screenings, remediation, education and further monitoring. The report has been reviewed by the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and the EPA. Fresh summer henries are starting to hit the stores and we know they won't be around forever. But it's actually very easy to freeze these fresh fruits so yon can enjoy them later. Simply spread your favorite. unwashed (dampness is a no no) berries in one layer on a tray and place them in the freezer. When they're hard, pour them into plastic hags or freezer containers. When youre ready to use them, rinse them under cool water, which washes as well as helps defrost them. Use them for smoothies or add to pancake or muffin batter. And, wanned with a little synip. they make a great waffle topping. If you sometimes take allergy medicine containing diphenhydramine pay attention to the warning label. Diphenhydramine, the antihistamine found in Benadryl, acts as a sedative and can be more dangerous than alcohol when you drive. A study in the March 7 Annals of Internal Medicine reports 40 study volunteers performed worse in a test after taking diphenhydramine than after drinking enough alcohol to boost their hkxxl alcohol level to 0. I percent, which is above the legal limit in most states. Contact your doctor about using alternative, nonsedating medications. And speaking of alternative allergy drugs. Blue Cross of California is pushing the Food and Drug Administration to make the three most popular ones available without a prescription. Currently, allergy sufferers have to get a prescription fur Claritin, Allegro and Zyrtec, and pay the higher prescription price. Currently, all three drugs are available in Canada over the counter and are much cheaper. Blue Cross argues that, because they are nonsedating, these drugs are actually safer than overt hccounter alternatives, and that forcing patients to schedule an office visit to obtain a prescription imposes unfair time and financial burdens on them.
