January 28, 2000 Off The Beaten Path by Eric Hodecker Promises by Leon Slmlster One thing about Democracy is that aside from being perhaps the greatest type of authoritative leader- ship guarant- eeing individual freedoms, it also contains great promise of future optimism as well. And it shows a marked trend for democratic lead- ers (read: politicians) to think, their own mistakes. The process also leaves great areas y in which of questionable the skillful politician can practice his art of mistakes." Like - what a major think it was think and ar cover-your-re- re-thi- lee-wa- for our political shot-calle- rs to "donate" 84, (XX) acres of land back to the ones they originally stole it from in the first place; the Ute Indians. Charitable and compassionate, hey? I'll say, and all the Utcs have to do is come up with the estimated $300 million its going to take to clean it up before its worth anything to them. It's located down near Moab, Utah, and there's only about eleven million tons of radioactive uranium ore tailings deposited on it, which will have to be hauled away and buried somewhere (thereby contaminating some other area). Or, maybe, shot into space, in order to make the land worth something other than just a notch above totally worthless. (Sigh) It seems to me that whenever big brother says, "Have I got a deal for you..." run for cover. Get Civil Defense yourself an II bomb shelter and hole up until all the politicians responsible for the offer either die off or fall heir to - from 1887 to!934 - also succeeded in depriving them of an additional 86 million acres! some other malady that permanently removes them from office. Well, maybe the land is actually a magnanimous offer in disguise, because it'll always be there for future generations to use, and in a few thousand yean or so the danger posed by the radioactive waste will have diminished down to tolerable - meaning just your hair and teeth will fall out. Not to overlook the fact that this land was once owned by the Ute Indians original- Well, now this 84,000 acre (?) is going to make up wind-fa- ll for all that? Yeah, right. And I would imagine the old men of the tribes, in passing their stories handed down from generation to generation, will not forget to include the part about the white man's government who made over 400 treaties with the Indians between the years 1887 to 1934 and broke every one of them! Not only that, but the Indians were not even made citizens of the U.S.A until 1924. Remarkable, isn't it? Even though there are about 300 Indian tribes in America today, their linguistic heritage is disappearing. I think most folks know that the Fed's history of land dealings with the Indians is, at mis-treat- ed -- in about every imagin- able way by or at least unopposed by - die U.S. Government. Commencing with the wanton slaughter of the buffalo from 1890 to I89S (which was the main source of sustenance to the Indians), the population of these beasts dropped from seventy million down to just eight hundred! Not coincidentally, but during approximately the same time, the number of Indians, likewise, fell from more than two million to no more than ninety thousand. Poverty, along with war, disease and the loss of their lands and livelihood did this to them, and wors- speakers left, and the Osage Indians have only five of their people who speak the tongue. When the movie. Dances With Waives, was filmed there was not one of the Lakota tribe (the lan- guage used in the movie) who could be found to act as language adviser to the film crew. Sadly, only nostalgia prevails when discussion recalls the heritage of our native Americans. Whoever said, "Promises were made to be broken," must have had politics ened as they were gathered up and crowded onto reservations. This past weekend gave me another opportunity to feel extremely grateful for family and life itself. On Saturday morning the phone in our home rang with dispatch being on the other end. It was one of those heart stopping calls which thankfully turned out to be okay in the end. We were told that our son's van had caught on fire near Wanship as he was going to work, and he needed to be picked up. Moore's towing had already picked him up when we got to Wanship so back to Coalville we went. I don't really know just what I expected to see, but I was not prepared to see the van without win- dows. the paint burned off and NOTHING led inside. There was no evidence that two car seats had been inside at all. I felt so blessed to have a son that was ok and not hurt and to know that my daughterand three grandsons in-la- w hadnt been inside. It is strange, but when I start "thinking" about a certain subject, it seems that events take place in my life that go right along with the topic.
