Show SEPTEMBER American 1996 Adventure Bicycling from One Coast to the Other By Christopher Smart FO" Rockerfeller Center on the island of Manhattan 3,873 miles to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Brian and Peggy Goetz from Salt Lake are riding their bicycles across the same route pedaled by Peggy’s mother 40 years ago June Meyer and her friend, Terry Foster, where the first two women to ride bicycles from coast-to-coast. In 1956, the two New Yorkers were looking for a cheap way to get to California and goaded each other into riding bicycles. Schwinn came up with a couple of three-speed roadsters and the young women were on their Way. Almost exactly 40 years later, Schwinn has popped for bikes again, this time for Brian and Peggy. But this time, the bicycles have a a f few more gears - about 20 more “I have been hearing about this story since I was born. About all the people and all the places,” said Peggy, preparing to depart her Salt Lake City home for New York. “I have always wanted to have an adventure like mom's.” ’ This trip is seat-of-the-pants, no pun intended. Brian has planned an itinerary, but the pair will have no support, except across hot and_ lonely stretches of the Nevada desert. ‘If support comes along, we'll accept it,” says Brian. “We're self-contained but we aren't taking any cooking gear or food.” That's the adventure, explains know Peggy — they dont where they'll be spending the night or what they'll be eating. Their bikes will be loaded with sleeping bags, a lightweight tent, some tools and a change of clothes. “We do plan on motels and friends and friends-of-friends along the way,” Brian explained. “Or we can pull over in some farmer’s field.” But if history is any indicator, they might have an offer of a farm house to sleep in along the way. In the summer of 1956, June Meyer and Terry Foster found a lot of new friends along their bicycle route. Their journey was chronicled in numerous newspaper accounts from any number of towns and cities they passed through.
