Sauvignon Blanc also is characterized by a crisp acidity, which makes it a good wine to match with food — the acidity tends to refresh the palate. Some of the current offerings in the Utah State Wine Stores worth seeking out are Oxford Landing Is Sauvignon Blanc by any other name still a Sauvignon Blanc? The answer is yes. In California, Sauvignon Blanc goes by the name Fume’ Blanc, as well. As the story goes, the honorable Robert Mondavi, in an attempt to get consumers to try his relatively new varietial wine, coined the term “Fume’ Blanc.” At the time, he..apparently was rounded texture and hints of spice, herbs anda touch of bell pepper. concerned, ability to «with wine consumers pronounee..the word The Markham 1994 Napa Valley — $7.95 — made in a fruity- “sauvignon.” Remember, this was the late ‘60s when premium wine was called Ripple, Spanada and Chablis and was made by wineries like Almaden, Gallo and, dare I say, Boones Farm. Actually the word, fume’, meaning smoke, was borrowed from the French wine Pouilly-Fume’ — a dry Sauvignon Blanc, which is light, round, crisp and very enjoyable from the Loire Valley of France. It is also grown in the Bordeaux region of France, where it is made into the sweet, very luxurious and very expensive “Sauternes,” as well as the very dry “Graves.” On the whole, Sauvignon Blanc is an exceptional white wine grape and for the money, offers an excellent value for a dry, white wine — especially when compared to the pricey Chardonnay. It has a range of flavors that can be described as floral, herbal and fruity, reminiscent of citrus, pear style, shows juicy grapefruit, roasted bell pepper, nice French oak and a silky texture. The Murphy-Goode Fume’ Blanc Alexander Valley 1994 is a and apricot and even ranging to a vegetable-like flavor of asparagus, 1993 from. Seuth Eastern, Australia — $6.05. It is medium-bedied with a soft, richer style of Sauvignon $9.90 — with assertive smoky flavors that are Blanc — oak and not for the faint of heart. Laymus Vineyards 1994 Napa Valley — $10.85 — is a barrel ferment version, crafted in a Chardonnay-like style. It has rounded, supple texture, toasty oak and a lingering finish. One of my favorites is the Duckhorn 1994 Napa Valley — $14.30 — more on the delicate side, it exhibits juicy berry-like fruit, melons, herbs, vanilla and some very nice smoky French oak. It is sleek, silky and refined. Lastly, Morton Estates 1995 Hawkes Bay — $14.70 — shows exuberant, fresh grapefruit and berry flavors with crisp acidity and longlingering grapefruit flavors in the finish. It is well worth the money. @ Ready or Not, Here It Comes : : Continued from page 5 Genie, I was excited. Surely this must be some kind of mechanized diaperchanger. Hallelujah! Do you rub the baby’s bottom and this Diaper Genie comes out, changes the urchin, and removes the offending matter? Upon discovering it didn’t quite work that way I was disappointed. Diaper changing remains a manual Operation, complete with olfactory August 3 & 4, 1996 Presented By BANK=ONE ambiance. Whatever it takes. Actually, there are lots of neat kid things to get. You have your Exersaucer, a contraption where the child can stand up but not walk, while bobbing around every which way. (Maybe they should Proceeds benefit the Kimball Art Center—a non-profit organization. For more information call 1-801-649-8882 PAGE 6 add adult sizes for those heavy drinking occasions.) You've got to love the Winnie the Pooh kid’s room theme. (Cute as all get out, and basically the only “pooh” reference I can stomach.at this point.) And Dr. Seuss is probably my favorite author, big or small, so reading will still be fun. (Maybe I even could sneak a teething ring to the golf course to keep my teeth calm on those five foot tournament putts.) So, you are ready, aren’t you? Of course I’m ready, well, almost ready. I’m still working on the whole body excretion issue . .. but I’m sure I'll get it, with or without a Diaper Genie. @ |
