If you are new to wine drinking or red Zinfandels, you're in for a great treat. Experts across the board say the1990s provide a string of great years for Zinfandels that is practically unprecedented in wine making. This is quite a contrast when you consider that the popularity of red Zins fell by the wayside during the 1980s as Cabernet Sauvignons became the reds of the day. Once popular for their high octane, red Zins were derided as too ripe with too much alcoholic content — 16 percent and higher. But during the past four to five years, as Cabs and White Zins have enjoyed popularity, more sophisticated wine-making techniques have yielded red Zins that have led to a quiet resurgence in their popularity. The alcohol level and ripe taste have been controlled to yield zesty, fruity wines that are enjoyable to new wine drinkers as well as more experienced palates.
