Show v The Summit County Bee Page A2 July 23, 1999 r Me About Tell was read- ing some facts about the planet on which we live the other day. and was & more than a little surprised to learn that each of us riding on this earthly home of ours is clipping along through the universe at about 67,000 miles per hour (or roughly the speed the average teenage driver attains as he leaves the high school parking lot). We earthly inhabitants are snails compared to the sun's speed, though because it circles the Milky way at about 486.000 mph. That's 13S miles per second, and close to the speed I strive for when my wife says. Do it ... now'.'' But even at this speed, it takes the sun and the other planets in our solar system 226 million years to circle the center of our home galaxy. Imagine packing for a week-en- d trip of that duration! Our galaxy, as you probably know, is only one of 100 billion stars in the Milky Way. and is also just one of the billions of galaxies in the universe. How do we know this? Well, because scientists have investigated it thoroughly. When they shot the Hubble telescope into space in 1990. it enabled them to become much smarter than they already were. They're finding out all kinds of hitherto unknown things about the cosmos" They've even come up with a new age for the universe which is about 1.3 to 2 billion years ..younger than they have always ijhought it was. This gives me great by Leon Slmlster hope because I'm glad that at least something is getting younger. The age of stellar objects are determined by the light waves they emanate. These waves also tell us that the universe is expanding at an incredibly rapid rate. When these ), objects pulsate a red color it means they are moving away from the viewer. Blue pulsa(red-shift- tions (blueshift) indicates move- ment toward the viewer. By measuring these colored pulsations, scientists can determine the distance the objects are from their view. Just last May 6 (photographed via the Hubble telescope) a discovery was made of an enormous and intense explosion close to the far edge of the universe that occurred 12 billion years ago. It took that length of time for the light (traveling at 186,000 miles per second - or six trillion miles per year) to reach the viewer, Imagine holding still that long, waiting to snap your Brownie. Most scientists embrace the Big Bang Theory," which is the accepted standard for the origin of the universe. It's scientific explanation is that a single point of infinitely dense and infinitely hot matter exploded spontaneously, Thought to be smaller than the head of a pin, it was this beginning that gave birth to all of the galaxies, stars and planets. More proof of this theory came come back to one point. Later. Einstein's General Theory of Relativity became the basis of an intensive mathematically proven study by Roger Penrose and Stephen Hawking that offers proof of the Big Bang Theory's accuracy. Personally, 1 like the philosophy of the Adam and Eve thing, I find comfort in believing it was engineered, controlled and guided by some Super Intelligence who is still very much in control. (See last week's column, quote, Don't make me come down there, God.) There's still so much we humans dont know, nor even begin to understand. Even the most brilliant of scientists readily admit their studies, opinions and conclusions are subject to errors, upward of six percent." Given that the outer boundaries of our known universe is documented at up to 90 billion light years distant, six percent of that figure leaves a considerable was gap for error. And I have to think that the Great Creator, being perfect in all things, has it figured a little more closely than that. Admittedly, it would be highly argumentative and of dubious outcome to argue the pros and cons of each prolegomenon, with sparse chance of significant mutual agreement. It's a discussion no one would win, but both would think they had, leaving nothing solved. Thank heaven there's always room for knowledge, because we should never stop learning. expanding, and advanced the theory that, if one could reverse the Thought for the day: It's what with the advent of the Hubble Telescope, named after the scientist. They have really had some trying times as a family. As I contemplated for a moment of the family and their lives, I caught myself thinking about so many other families that I know of on a much more personal basis and the many trials they have had to endure. The only difference is that they are not written about in the news or have books relating their history or make the television scene. Nevertheless, hcros' they are to me for their ability to make the best of a horrible situation. As a community. ( from Hencfer to Woodland) there has been a lot of tragic events I have written about from a news basis over the past several years. These are the hardest for me to write, because I guess I am not a very indepth type of reporter for those things, and the families feelings are something I try very hard to take into consideration.
