Based on this game and his performances prior to his injury, he was named to The-Tribun- Brent Ure, the son Junior Brock Johnson added another plaque to his collection recently when he was chosen to the Tribune Honorable All-Sta- te e te season. Doug was having a great year as an unstoppable fullback in the Wildcats running game. He was on course to break some Wildcat records before he was hurt in the Park City game. Doug was also playing middle linebacker and was a big part of the defense before he went down to injury. Doug fought hard to be able to return for the playoffs, and had a great game against the Braves. Doug is a four year football player and is also in his fourth year as a member of the Wildcat basketball team. He starts at forward and is a team leader in rebounding and scorI ing. Doug's main hftbby away from school is racing motocross bikes with his brother. He is the son of Darrell and DiAe Roberts, of Mention team following the 1997 football season. Brock played defensive back for the South Summit Wildcats and had some of the hardest hits registered by any Cat Brock was relentless in his pursuits and also tallied numerous tackles. On offense. Brock was one the Cats many running backs. His break away speed helped him gain considerable yardage. Brock is one of the many juniors who contributed to the Wildcats winning season and will be one of the players Coach Walker looks to next season to lead the team. In addition to football. Brock is involved in the wrestling program at South Summit. He finished first as a freshman and is determined to return to the first place podium after a second place finish last year. Brock is the son of Bob and Deb Johnson, of Oakley. as an All State lineman. He was named first team AH State on the defensive and offensive line. Brent is currently a senior at South Summit High School. Last year, Brent was awarded the Honorable Mention All State award . Brent served as a captain of the Wildcat football team this year where he proved to be a great leader. Brent lead the team mainly by example. He was the prime example of "smashmouth football" a strategy that includes hard hitting and no talk. Idolized by all of the younger football players, Brent will always be one of those people whom upcoming players will try to imitate. Brent has learned hard work and dedication through his family business: a dairy farm, where his days begin before sunrise and end when all the chores have been completed. Brent says his inspiration came from his father, who played football at BYU. "I have always admired his work habits, and I have always wanted to play at a college like my dad did." says Ure. Brent is a prime example of what hard work can produce. He sees no shortcuts he takes no shortcuts. That is how you become great, and Brent Ure is a prime example of that . He knows what he wants and : how to achieve it, and with and effort he usually .achieves his goals. - one-hand- ed - Mocking end. On defense, his came from his end position and was a continual threat to opposing quarterbacks. He also punted on special teams. Jed is a starting forward on the Wildcats basketball team and is the president of the Rodeo Club. Jed has qualified for the State and National finals in his favorite and hopes for event, one more trip to the Nationals. Last Friday, Dec. 12, the South Summit Swim Team was sadly defeated by the Uintah Utes in their fifth home meet of the year. Among the teams, were also North Summit, and Union High. This swim meet was handled a bit differently than usual. Many swimmers were unable to swim, due to the flu that is going around. The team made great accommodations to fill every event, but, in the end, they pulled it off and as an outcome, there were a lot of goals reached and best times gained. Finally, the many hours of hard work in the pool start to pay off! Here are the results: Women in the 200 medley relay, S. S. came in second to Uintah. Women's 200 Free was swam by Rachel Wagstaff, and for a change, she swam the whole thing backstroke! (which is allowed). She swam her best time, or should I say, lifetime best, because she has never swam a 200 back in a race. Maleia Littledike also swam the 200 and placed second, behind Uintah. Joelle Conger also swam in this race and placed fourth. Rebecca Lambert placed first in the 200 1.M. with a time of 2:34.83, a respectable time, but not her best. In the 50 free, Laura Wagstaff placed seventh, also with a respectable time of 33.7.; Holly Butler swam the 100 butterfly and beat her best time with a 1: 17.08, placing second. Maleia Littledike placed first in the 100 free with an excellent time of 1.00.87. Joelle Conger swam in the 300 free and placed third with a time of 7: 10.48. S.S. placed third in the 200 free relay. Holly Butler swam the 100 backstroke and placed third with a time of 1: 12.30, a time of which she has since beat. Rachel Wagstaff also swam back- -. stroke. COPY!! last event swam was the 400 free relay and S. S. girls came in at a close second place. Over all the girls scored a total of 74 points, beating Union and North Summit, but lost to Uintah. Men: Swimming in the 200 medley relay, South Summit boys also placed second. Matthew Glade gained his best time ever while swimming the 200 Free, 2:41.82. Also swimming in the 200 were Trevor Rezac and Czar Caldwell. In the 200 IH. Troy Beckstead finished fifth with a 2:46.23. Mike Ruf also placed third in the I.M. with a time of 2:29.90. Next up, die 30 Free. Bryce Mildon in first place with a time 24.68. Mitch Mildon in third with 26.13. Bart Lee and Jared Jensen came in 5th and 6th. Troy Beckstead, Conor Jensen, and Jared Jensen, swam in the 100 free. Conor Jensen beat his best time by seven seconds, many congrats. As always, Mike Ruf swam the. 300 free and got his best time at a 6:09.81. in the 200 free relay. South Summit boys came in first place with a time of 1:43.33. Swimming the 100 backstroke, was Bryce Mildon, Trevor Rezac, and Conor Jensen, who beat his best time again with a 1:20.45. Mitch Mildon, Bart Lee, and Matt Glade swam the 100 breaststroke, and all of them received their best times so far. The 400 Free Relay was defeated by Uintah and S. S. came in second. of Robert and Viklci Ure, was recently recognized All-Sta- te Honorable Mention football team for the 1997 All-Sta- Jed Gines ended a great career with the South Summit Wildcats t by being named to the Tribune sec- ond team Football team for 1997. Jed had almost decided not to play, but the lure of a new coach, and the challenge of die game made him decide to join the Cats. Jed played tight end on offense and was the go-t- o guy when the Cats needed some tough yards in the middle. He' made numerous grabs and was always a threat to gain a bunch of yards on the run after the catch. He also helped open some holes for the running backs as a deter-jninati- ' V WMtMTWfa . " All-Regi- Weber Duals While most students look forward to the weekend as a time for relaxation and recreation, the wrestlers know that the weekend means it's time for yet another tournament. This past weekend was no exception. The grapplers from South Summit left Friday, Dec. 19. 1997 to travel to the Weber Duals. The Cats were the only 2A team invited as they joined host Weber, Sky view, Tooele, Bear River, Alta Cedar City and Star Valley. WY. in the two-daevent. These tournament are an important part of the season for the team. They allow the wrestlers a lot of competition in a short amount of time. Depending on the format of the tournament, a wrestler might get as many as eight matches or more during the two days. Because the Cats are well known throughout the state as a team that will guarantee several slate champions, they are invited to some of die toughest y o . eyes of blue, has anybody seen my girl?" Five-foot-tw- tournaments. This makes for a high level on competition in ever match. The Cau currently filling the varsity roster are: John Neff at 103, Tuckett Crittenden at 112, Paul Kunz at 1 19 and Aaron Robinson at 123. Weighing in at 130 is Wes Harris. Palmer Hagan goes at 133, with Brock Johnson at 140. Jeremy Hardy has dropped to 143 and Ryan Bates wrestles 152. At 161, Josh Walker and Jesse Jones battle it out from week to week and Daniel Marchant fill the 172 spot The current State Champ at 189 pounds is Brent Ure, who is looking for his second state title. Aaron Heiner is overcoming a broken hand, but is still competitive at 215, and Andy Schumann has to actually try and gain weight to wrestle at the heavyweight position. The JV team has some tough competitors who keep pushing for the Varsity spots. At the Weber Duals, Curtis Cox and Mark Ith placed second. Finishing third were Brody Lewis and Luke Knight, while BoDe Wilde and Corey Anderson took fourth. In the Varsity division, seniors and team captains Tuckett Crittenden and Brent Ure lead the way with first place finishes. Brock Johnson and Paul Kunz captured the silver, while Aaron Robinson and Josh Walker took the bronze of third place. The wrestlers have a match at home on Tuesday and then get a Christmas break. Their next tournament is the always tough Uintah Tournament of Champions on Jan. 2--3, 1998. The Wildcats will host their annual High Country Classic on Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998. This is always a good tournament, so come out and support the team. Ladycafs Fall To Farmers Student Writer: . Kelsey White The region Ladycat basketball games have not yet begun. However, Coach Woolstenhulme scheduled several games for the team to play to gain experience and improve their game. On Dec. 19, the Granite Fanners traveled up the canyon to pay a visit to South Summit The Ladycats were defeated in all three games, but learned some valuable lessons. The Freshman Ladycats played an intense game against the Farmers. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 6. In the second quarter, the Farmers got a Mt ahead of the Ladycats and ended the half with a score of The Ladycats livened up after the half. Kaisi Edwards helped the team immensely with heir several steals. The farmers didn't give up, though, and got away with the win with a final score of 26-2Joelee Conger and Rachel McNeil were the high scorers form South Summit; they each had six points. Scores from the Junior Varsity game were unavailable. However, Lynsi Jullian and May on Sargent both played great games. The JV team was also defeated by Granite. The Varsity Ladycats got off to a pre-seas- on 16-1- 0. very slow start, scoring only four points in the first quarter. Their defense was there, the offense just wasn't coming through. They kept trying to make things happen, and managed to outscore the Fanners in the second quarter ending the first half with a score of 10-1When they came out of the locker room after half-tim- e, the Ladycats looked determined. They put on a great press which earned them several fastbreaks. Stephanie Ure acquired eight points in the third quarter, boosting the Ladycats to a one point lead. The fourth quarter was obviously in favor of the Farmers. The Ladycats were running out of time and were forced to foul to try to get 6. the ball back. The Farmers made and their most of their lead increased. Lynsi Geotgi, who was the high scorer for the rs Ladycats, made two to make a total of 12 points for the evening. The Ladycats tried everything, but were unable to get the points they needed to win.
