Show Friday, Dacambar 15, 1995 What Can You by Bill Carter, RN, BSN Elizabeth Carter, RN, MS Ibis week one of our daughters came to us and asked us to check her for head lice. We were a prised. She told us she had heard head lice was showing up among some of the students at her school. checked her - and (thankfully) didn't find any sign of head lice. we did find that hairs pray or shampoo had built up on the crown of her head, causing small white flakes that easily shook out of her hair. We advised her to wash her hair extra well to get rid of the bit-su- , buildup. Yet, head lice is a fairly common problem. Cases of it occur frequently throughout the country, including occurrences in Summit County. Head lice infestations occur most often among school-ag- e children or children who attend day-car- e; however, they can ofccur among people of any age. So, what causes these all too frequent of head lice? Can they be prevented? And, how should head lice be treated if someone in your family gets it? Head lice (or the condition that is officially called pediculosis) occurs when tiny insects called lice infest a person, becoming parasites that live on that person causing problems. To be specific, it is caused by the infestation of a person's head, the hairy parts of a person's body, or their clothing!' The infestation can be caused by adult lice, larvae (baby lice), and nits dice eggs). The most common site infested by lice is the hair or scalp on a person's head. Female lice are generally the size of a sesame seed. They are so small you can hardly see them. Nits are tiny tan or pearl-gra- y specks that attach to the hair shaft close to the scalp. They are "cemented" to the hair shaft when they are laid and are not easily removed. Nits hatch in a week and mature eigjit to ten days later, ready to lay eggs of their own. It should be noted that lice can be transmitted to mother person as long as lice or eggs remain alive on an infested person. Lice are transmitted by direct contact with an infefcted person. Transmission occuri by sharing hats, combs, brushes, 'or other articles recently in contact with the head of the infested person. Transmission can also occur when out-brea- ks ' : the infested person's hair directly touches another person's hair. This can occur when children are playing together, hugging, etc. Lice DO NOT jump or fly from one person Commission Notes... Schvaneveldt says the father in a typical family engages in a lot of gate keeping. Permission giving, rule formulation and administration have been traditional activities for fathers. However, fathers' role is less well defined. According to Dr. Jay Schvane-veld- t, family and human development researcher in the Utah State University College of Family Life, fathers' role during Christmas is best described as "gate keeping." Fathers are the ones who decide when Christmas activities begin.
