Show 8A The Summit County Bee Friday, December 15, 1995 Planetarium To Celebrate First Day of Winter Hansen Planetarium would like all area residents to know that winter will officially begin in the northern hemisphere on Friday, Dec. 22, at 1:17 a.m. (MST) with the occurrence of the December Solstice, also called the Winter Solstice. On Dec. 22. the sun rises and sets at its southernmost points along the horizon and the length of daylight is the shortest of the year approximately 9 hours and 15 minutes. "Solstice" literally means "sun standing still" along the horizon. For several days before and after the solstice, the sun appears to AMSHCAM OVVCT53 I.SOCIETY Book Review: rise and set at approximately the same point on the horizon. At other times of the year, the point on the horizon where the sun rises and sets is noticeably different every day. After Dec. 22, the sun will appear to rise and set more and more northerly along the horizon and the time of daylight hours will increase until the June (summer) Solstice. Hansen Planetarium will celebrate the December Solstice with a live presentaspecial tion entitled "The Stars of The Solstice" on Friday. Dec. 22, at 4 p.m. in the Planetarium's St::r Theatre. It may be the depth of the plot, the vision created by the writer or a tale that captures me so fully I can read for hours without realizing the passing of time. These books, which are all too few, inspire me to write and eventu- ally publish my own books. Meanderings, by Dennis Smith, is one of those books. Smiths book is a collection of word images and drawings from his weekly column in the Deseret News. And as the name implies, the tales are meanderings around Smith's life. Reading his work does more than provide a pleasant diversion however, you will feel as if you have actually been the places Smith has been, and seen the things he has seen. I could go on about Smith's writ- lowing passage is take straight from the book and is titled The Pace of Things. A young boy about eleven years old with a baseball cap and a with a logo on it comes in, goes over to the cooler and gets a bottle of Pepsi one of the new, stubby bottles with the twist-o- ff cap and plastic wrapping on it.
