Lady Cat Basketball On Dec. 8, the Ladycats took on the Lady Scots of Loman High School, a 3A schodl. The starters for the Cats were: Sondie Mitchell, Bi Brittani Gordon, Julie Blazard, Tanya Woolstenhulme, and Brandi ' Gordon. The Cats took cqntrol early in the first quarter of thf game. It was a contest of speed, and the Cats came out on top at the end of the first quarter, 13 to 10. The Scots came back strong in the second quarter and the Cats could not hold them. The Scots took the lead 31 to 23. The Cats came back in the third quarter and held the Scots back, allowing them only six points, while the Cats cut the lead to two points. The fourth quarter was very fast paced and very close. The two teams passed the lead back and forth in a grueling match of speed. In the last 30 seconds with the game tied, the Lady Scots ran the clock down to 6 seconds, then they called a time-ou- t. When they came back in, the Lady Scots drove up the middle and dropped a shot at the last second, winning the game, 49 to 47. everybodys mind. It took the class the whole first trimester to com- The Child Abuse Prevention Council is outraged by the excessive Christmas sales of the Jibba Jabber" doll, a toy created for children to grab its long, skinny neck and shake its head so it makes a squawking noise. The Child Abuse Prevention Council has asked diligently for the past three years to teach people about the extreme dangers of shaking babies and young children, said Marilyn Sandberg, Executive Director of the Child Abuse Prevention Council. This doll teaches and even advocates concepts that are totally contrary to what weve been striving to communi- cate to parents, babysitters, and other care givers. Child Abuse Prevention Council staff called numerous retail stores in the area and found that most stock the Jibba Jabber doll; some even reported being sold out Ertl, the toy company that manufactures the doll, recently put stickers in various places on the box to cover up pictures of the doll and being' grabbed by the neck like as wording shaken as well Grab my neck and shake my head. I do give manufacturers some credit for their attempt to reduce the offensiveness of the instructions on the box; however, the stickers are easily pulled off and the whole concept of the doll is wrong and damaging, said Sandberg. The Councils research shows 18 babies in Utah have died from Shaken Baby Syndrome in the past three years, and many more have suffered extreme consequences.such as brain damage and blindness. The Council is a private, nonprofit agency which serves to prevent child abuse in the community. For the past three years, they have been part of a National Campaign to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome through education and intervention. On Friday, Dec. 9, the South Summit studentbody attended a dance directly after the boys basketball game to celebrate the defeat of the Granite Farmers. The dance had a good turnout, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Mz McNeil was the D.J., mixing it up on the turn tables and playing the music that everyone liked. Some people go to the dance to dance, others go to sit and talk to their friends. Either way, we're glad for the good turnouts that come to every dance. If you havent attended a dance this year, you should come and see some of the new toys that Mz. has bought. They really light up the dances and makes it tons' better. Students are Cultured On Dec. 7, the South Summit High School English classes attended a play at the Pioneer Memorial Theatre. The title of the play was Hay Fever." The play, by Noel Coward, is a story about a slightly insane family who has invited numerous people to spend the weekend at their English home. The situation erupts into total chaos! There are actresses and actors running amuck on the stage. This play contains large amounts of humor and superior acting ability. AH in all this play was a great success.
