Show 4A TIm Summit County Boo Friday, Docombor 17, 1993 North Summit South Summit Senior Citizens 4 I t I Christmas is surely coming if the good spirit that exists in our Center continues on. The tree was being trimmed by Vice President Eleanor Morby and her willing workers, Marr Hennek and Cleon Trujillo, as well as othen who have an artistic eye. President Jerry Burt was busy giving out the greetings and explaining he doesnt do trees nor windows. Even so, we keep him busy! We caught up on the current news of our members. Sorry to leam that Edna Spriggs has passed away after an extended illness. Her funeral was Dec. 11 with many of us attending. Edna was very active until she broke her hip. Many a stitch she has done for the club projects. Our sympathies are extended to Esther Brown, who lost her only sister this week. They had ten older brothers, and Esther is the last one of them. I cant imagine having ten older brothers, oh, my, the white shirts that had to be ready for Sunday morning! We send our greetings to Leah Morby, who is in a rest home in Ogden, and to Myrla Vernon, who is doing pretty good in McKay-De- e, along with all you nice members that cant be with us. Meetings were conducted by President Burt. Secretary Woodrow Nielson read the minutes, and Senior Citizens' prayers were offered by Lillie Burt Charmay and Shirley Phelps. homemade peanut brittle, which we Jerry welcomed the guests, which were: Thelma Hansen, Susie Werner, George Perkins, Jr., and Kathy Wilde. Susie wasnt able to stay for dinner but we hope she will be back while she is visiting her son, Dave, and family. George Perkins, Jr., really has the Christmas spirit and made a nice cash donation to the club for which we thank him. We really like to have him come and he contributes nicely with the band. Jerry reminded everyone that our Christmas Party will be next Friday the 17th with the fun really starting right after a pork chop dinner, plus we will be having a New years Eve potluck supper, but no dinner meeting on Dec. 31. The party is to start at 7:30 p.m. and go until sometime after midnight. He reminded us that all dues will be for the calendar year from now on and they are due Jan. 1. Some members have already prepaid. Woodrow Nielson told us a true story of his most recent haircut. things. Jerry read a nice Christmas poem. Melanie Bosworth, RN, from Creekside Home Health Cans, took blood pressures for 19 of us and handed out suckers with her nice smile. We act like kids so she treated us that way. There were many Christmas arts and craft items on display with some for sale. If you need something unusual and really neat, you should come see what our members can produce. We have to bid farewell to LaRita Jacobson, who has resigned from her cooking position to accept other employment. She has promised to visit from time to time, though. Jean Clark will fill in until something permanent is worked out. The band practiced to add music to the Center. I FOR YOUR HOLIDAY ENJOYMENT! She was assisted by her sister, Aliza Brown, and accompanied by LaReen Judd on the piano. The children were: Jeff and Mark Moody, Hillary and Megan Judd, Sarah Haws, Danica Mortensen, and Candace Moore. Those kids really pay attention to their music and perform so well. Thanks to all. Albert Chavez spent a couple of weeks in the LDS and had a five bypass operation, glad to report he came through it with flying colors and he is at last home and doing well. Donna Otteson spent seven days in a Bountiful hospital with pneumonia and complications, and she is also home, but will be housebound for ashile, but is coming along. Warren Atkinson was in a couple days for a double hernia operation. He is home and doing pretty good. He was in the Holy Gross. Elmer (Morgan), i There are probably a lot of reasons why the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is known as The Christmas Choir." One is its home base in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, which is decorated hundreds sparkling always so festively for the holidays with of thousands of tiny, lights. Another ia the collective musical abilities of choir members and leaders, who special meaning and significance. But if you ask the choirs musical director, Dr. Jerold Ottley, hell tell you that this year there is at least one other contributing factor to the choirs reputation as the Choir of Christmas: frequency. Morris Travel Weve celebrated Christmas three times already this year, Dr. Ottley said during a recent inter- view. Due to all the illness that is which will also be recorded for year. Which is not to aay that choir members are feeling somehow less Christmasy this year as the holiday season rolls around. In fact, Dr. Ottley says, ita quite the opposite. They cant get enough to it, he said, referring to choir members and their affinity for Christmas music. Personally, they like the music, and they find it to be a relief from some of the other things we do that are more musically and intellectually challenging. This js music that sings rather easily and brings out their best in terms of their emotional and spiritual values. The two new Christmas recordings, the choirs 11th and 12th holiday collections, reflect those emotional and spiritual values, albeit, differently. And if most of that sounds like familiar Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas music, it is by design. People dont like to be challenged at Christmas they like to be warmed, Dr. Ottley said. "Thats why the bulk of our output is the familiar material. Still, choir leaders are constantly on the lookout for what Ottley called new material that has a familiar ring and familiar material with a new twist. For example, the choir repertoire includes five differ- ent arrangements of Oh Come Immanuel, the traditional opener of a Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert. The different arrangements are rotated from year to year and from recording to recording to keep the material feeling fresh to singers and listeners alike. But more than anything else, it is the unique combination of music musicians that makes Christmas and the Mormon and Tabernacle Choir such a perfect fit. The Christmas story of the birth of Jesus Christ in a manger in Bethlehem is central to our beliefs as a Church, Dr. Ottley said. So singing Christmas music is not just a musical experience for the members of the choir, but a cultural, aesthetic, and religious experience. The natural warmth of Christmas music elicits a special warmth from the choir, and I think people feel that and it touches them, regardlesi of their religious background," Dr. Ottley continued. "You cant help but feel something when talented musicians perform music that co&es not only from their artistry, but from their hearts and souls, as well. And thats the way the Tabernacle Choir feds every Christmas season: were singing songs that we love, and that we feel. Even when the Christmas season comes two or three times a Steve and Louise Brown of L Cheapey Kamas fame are pleased to announce the relocation of their shop to join Bountiful Antiques at 399 N.
