Show Friday, December 4, 1992 Wrestling Results South Summit On Nov. 24, the wrestlers held their first meet. It was at home with Grand and North Summit JV and our team really looked good. JV: L. Hallam, Wildcats Eck-lan- d, 7-- 3, SUU Holiday Basketball Tourney Filled with turkey and all the trimmings, the South Summit Basketball teams managed to drag themselves onto a bus early Friday, Nov. 28 to make the long trip to Cedar City. The ;boys and girls team had been invited to play in the Southern Utah Uitiversity Holiday Tournament. , The boys started their season against a talented tpam from Moapa Valley, ID. The fivp seniors started the game. The Cats got off to a sluggish start and were down at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter improved a little, but the team still seemed to be nervous and struggled. The Cats went into the locker room at the half down by 12 points. They came out in the third still somewhat tentative. Just when the fans thought the Cats had failed to show up mentally, the team came alive. If the game was judged solely on the fourth quarter, the Cats would have won the game. Thayne Stem bridge got the hot hand and lead the Cats. Unfortunately, you have to count the whole game, and the Cats came up short. Thayne lead all scorers with 18, followed by Robbie Maynes with 13 points. All 12 members of the team saw action. Saturday, the Cats were determined to day the whole game using heads up offense and a tough D. They took on the team from Escalante. Both teams came out tough and the score was dose at the end of the first quarter. The Cats finished 38 points, including four Robbie had 18 and Joshua Tree popped in 17. three-pointe- rs. Cats in the game, scoring 28 of the Cats 50. Natalie Prescott added 8, but the Lady Cats fell short, 50-6- 6. Coach Shauna Woolstenhulme stated that she felt the team played well against the larger teams and although they would have liked to win, the team felt positive about the games. Kresta Simpson was named to the Team for the girls. Congrats, Kresta. The boys will play in the Holiday Tournament in Coalville on Friday and Saturday. Times are still TBA. The girls host the Holiday Tournament in Kamas this year. They also play on Friday and Cats with 18 points. Saturday with time TBA. Thacker, SS. On Nov. 25, we attended Juab's annual Turkey Tournament and the teams that attended were South Summit, Juab, Millard, Richfield, and Emory. Keep up the good work! hdd Christinas Kamas City will hold a Christmas Lighting Contest again this year. We will have weekly winners and then a A Grand Prize winner. It is hoped that all the residents with- in Kamas City boundaries will become involved, and get Jk. exited about the holiday season. Let's all band together to make the city a beautiful sight. Remember that " every little light counts. Leave them on until 9:00 p.m. There will be a 1st and 2nd place winner each week. On December 30th, the weekly winners will be again judged to chose the Grand Prize Winner. Winners will be posted each week in the Kamas City Bldg. and also published in the Summit County Bee. Good luck to all the residents of Kamas City. Let's all become involved and make this holiday season the very best ever! right and left. The scoring was spread around more in the fourth quarter as coach cleared the bench. Thayne lead all scorers again with Juab Turkey Tournament The day before Thanksgiving, the South Summit Wrestlers loaded the bus to head to Nephi to participate in the annual Juab Turkey Tournament This tournament is a VarsityJV tournament so the entire team was able to attend. The Cats were able to fill 10 out of 12 spots rm Varsity, and 9 of 12 spots on JV. This would give the Cats a good chance to win the overall points totals if everyone wrestled well. The day was filled with matches. Most of the wrestlers had three matches during the day. This really tests the conditioning of the athletes, and the Cats'came through with flying colors. Jn the Varsity bracket. Dusty Simpson at 103; Cameron Maxfield fit 112; Jeremy Harris at 119, and Mont Flygare at 140 lbs. all took fireplace. Second place finishers were Brent Edm unds at 125 and Mark Ure at 130. Kasey Fitzgerald at 135 and K.C. Thacker at 189 both took third. James Robertson at 145 and Addison Averett at 171 ended up with the fourth place medals. The Cats came roaring out in the third and blew the game open. Thayne kept popping the treys and Robbie and Jodi Sundberg added doubles In the JV tournament, the Cats also placed several wrestlers in the medal count Clive Hallam at 130 and Cody Atkinson at 135 finished with the gold medal. Amos Crystal at 140; Jimmy Clegg at 145, and Clint Marchant at 171 took the silver. Clint Moon took a bronze in the 152 lb. division. Lonn Thornton at 103; Lance Jorgenson at 1 19, and Cody Ekblad at 125 finished fourth. When the team totals were announced, the Varsity Cats finished in second place behind the 3A Emery Spartans. Sophomore Cody Atkinson was voted as the "Outstanding JV Wrestler" for the tournament. Way to go, Cody! Congratulations to all of the wrestlers for die super job they did. The team offers continual excitement, so come out and support the team and see some of the best wrestlers in die state. The team travels to Morgan on Dec. 3 and to the Cache Classic on Dec. 5. 1 o If & |
