With only 19 more days to do all the things that need to be done, the time will fly by for adults and drag for the children. With such a happy time so eminent, it is hard to think of the tragedy that happened just 50 years ago on Dec 7 and affected so many for so long. The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Air Force and Navy was certainly not expected by the average resident of Summit County and many others in our nation. Although America had been involved in wars before, some between the citizens of the states against one another such as the Civil War, we had enjoyed freedom ever since World War I and had hoped we would never go to war again. We innocently believed that the U. S. was so powerful, no one would dare attack American soil again. How wrong we were. Many of the older citizens remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when the announcement came over the radio. In all probability, very few radios were not turned on when President Franklin D. Rosevelt gave his message to Congress following Japan's surprise attack cm Pearl Harbor Dec 8, and used the famous phrase, "a date which will live in infamy and it just may do that. Of the approximately 90 U.S. warships in port, fortuitously, none of the Pacific Fleet's three camera was there; 18 were sunk or heavily damaged, including five battleships; 188 planes were destroyed; 2,403 military personnel and civilians killed. Amond them were victimes of trigger-happ-y sentries who shot at anything that moved in fear of imminent invasion. One civilian was shot dead reaching through a fence to retrieve his hat that had blown off. Fifty years after the Japanese attack, time seems as entombed at Pearl Harbor as the barnacle-encrustwrecks of the Arizona and the Utah that serve as headstones for the nearly 1,000 sailors buried in the sunken hulls. ed Sadly, this attack by Japan, made racial feelings between many Americans of Japanese descent and all other races that make up America. Even in this enlightened time, there is distrust and anger by many of both races. Hopefully, in future years, as the ones who actually lived through Dec 7, 1941 and World War II have passed on, the generations following will be able to forget and forgive that memorial day, and we are praying there will be no more to take its place. Just Thoughts From Bessie's Collection Whoever said Talk is cheap" never listened to a kid tell what he wants for Christmas. Each year the Hospital recruits sponsors for over 260 patients, ranging from 6 to 90 years of age, who would have no Christmas without the help of the community. The Forgotten Patient Christmas Program has been designed to help provide Christmas for these patients. The success of the program depends totally on community volunteers. Volunteers can help in a variety of ways.. For instance, families make take a patient name and provide Christmas for that person, cash donations are given and hospital volunteers do the shopping, some groups prefer to donate individual items such as men's or women's under clothing, socks, groaning items (combs, cologne, deodorant, make-uetc.). Donations of candy are also welcome. The Forgotten Patient Christmas Project is quite often the only touch of the holiday spirit these patients experience. Please feel the spirit of giving this holiday season and sponsor a forgotten patient For further information, call Janina Chilton or Shawna Peterson at the Utah Slate Hospital at p, 373-440- 0. We know that the success of the Forgotten Patient Christmas Pro- ject depends on getting the information out to the community.
