This despite the fact that diabetes is the leading cause of legal blindness in adults under the age of 63 and that about 70 percent of diabetes related blindness can be prevented or decreased by means of currently available medical techniques. Hypertension has been linked to diabetes as well. Approximately 30 percent of all Utah diabetics in a 1984 survey had or were experiencing hypertension. Anyone thirteen years of age or older, who has diabetes, may attend the clinic. Those coming to the screening clinic should wear shoes and socks that can be easily removed as well as dark glasses. The purpose of the Clinic is to screen for diabclcs-rclatc-d eye, foot, and hypertension complications and to refer participants with complications to their own health-car- e providers for necessary care. For the past three years, the KTVX promotion department has sponsored this campaign in an effort to send a very special holiday greeting to KTVX viewers across the slate. The contest will begin OcL 24 and end Nov. 14. Children 12 and under arc asked to use their imagination, creativity and individuality and draw what the holiday season means to them. There will be four winning designs, one in each of the following categories: 6 years and under, 7 to 9, 10 to 12, and a special category for disabled children 12 and under. Each winner will receive an individual award of $100 and an additional $100 will be awarded to the child's schoolgroup. Second and third place runners-u- p will receive gift certificates and 400 certificates of merit will be awarded.
