Sheriff Eley, "Mike" and Deputy Alan Siddoway. by Rick Jackson Next time you are traveling unique services of our canine unit confidence, knowing full well what through Summit County, you may "That's where Deputy Alan his dog can do. run into the newest member of the Siddoway comes in," says Eley. They approach an adjacent room Sheriff's Department. His name is "Alan is a dedicated, and very and the search is intensified. The Mike. He's highly trained, a specialist in his field, and he has several years experience in many areas of law enforcement. Mike is very excited about his new position and takes his job my seriously. "Mike" is a thoroughbred Goman shepherd dog; that's right, dog. But this dog is no ordinary dog, and his training evolves around the search and discovery of illegal drugs and paraphernalia. had the idea of obtaining a 'drug1 search dog for the county's law enforcement needs about a year and a half ago," stated Sheriff Fred Eley. "I asked for volunteers from any of the deputies, if they were interested, and Deputy Alan Siddoway came to me with the desire to obtain and to train with the dog. "Drags in the community are a concern to me and was the purpose for making the approach to the use in of this type of the battle against illegal drags. It's not a very big problem in the county, but it is there," Sheriff Eley said. "We will utilize 'Mike' 1 counter-measu- in various areas re of law enforcement to include assisting officers on search warrants, traffic stops, man tracking and assisting state corrections officers on their adult probation and parole checks within Summit County." Sheriff Eley says the drug dog is available at any time to assist every member of Sheriffs the Department, highway patrol, or any other department that requests the professional officer and has spent many hours, both on and off duty, training and working with his new partner 'Mike.' "Mike comes to Summit County having had most of his formal training in Nevada, as well as specialized training in various other areas in the Intermountain region," states Deputy Siddoway. "He's an outstanding dog, having made several 'hits' on illegal drugs discovered during search warrant service and traffic stops. I'm impressed with his abilities and have confidence that he will do well in the community with our task of pie-traine- d, curbing the drug problem." To prove the competence of the dog, and to dispel any ideas of disbelief, we were given a demonstration of those abilities before our very eyes. Sheriff Eley was given the task of hiding various drugs throughout the basement of the Sheriffs Office, as well as outside the building in the Sheriffs own patrol vehicle, at our request, of course. Upstairs Deputy Siddoway prepares his dog for the search to come, having no idea where the drugs have been hidden. Sheriff Eley .and the few chosen to watch the demonstration, wait in the basement with anticipation of whats to come. The elevator door opens and Alan and his new canine partner "Mike" exit the elevator and begin the search. Alan works his dog with dog sniffs as he moves about the room, thoroughly checking every item there. And then it happens, before you know it "Mike" has made a hit He begins to claw and scratch at the snowmobile, where the illegal drugs were hidden. It's impressive to see this dog work; both the officer and the dog know exactly what they are doing, and believe me, they do it well. All the drugs were found in the basement, but what about the ones out in Sheriff Eley's vehicle? Can this canine team work as well outside, where the wind blows, the sun shines, and there are many other distractions to throw off the dog and his handler? The answer is yes. We step outside to the vehicle and Deputy Siddoway commands his dog to begin the search. With precision the dog climbs into the trunk of the car and starts his coverage of all items within the trunk.. .and all of a sudden "Mike" has made the find. This dog is incredible. Sheriff Eley glances "Mike" hunts for the hidden stash of drugs. Sheriff Eley for his efforts in combatting drugs in Summit County; and take pride in the fact we have such dedicated professionals such as Deputy Alan Siddoway, who make an extra effort in the performance of their duties as law enforcement officers. Many extra hours of duty are involved in the training and development of this type of program. Without their type of dedication, it couldn't exist Says Sheriff Eley, "If we apprehend just one drug dealer, or make it difficult or next to impossible for young children to buy or obtain illegal drugs in our community, then we have done our job and the extra time and effort has been well worth 1. - . 6th ANNUAL FRANCIS FRONTIER DAYS towards me with a noticeable smile on his face, then I look towards Deputy Siddoway, who is also SEPTEMBER SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1339' Softball Tournament Makes Cents Split frankfurters lengthwise SaIiute with- sired, and stuff them with the e mixture.
