Show m1 The Summit County Bee Coalville, UT 84017 Friday, May 8, Valeria Yost, unique Summit County artist South Summit Senior Citizens honor Officers many opportunities to combine business with pleasure. She and hubby, Ernie, and their two children, boy and girl, are avid fishermen and hunters. They By Betty Larsen Valeria Yost is as unique and individual in her person, as is her extraordinary talent in her art work, Valerias interest in art blossomed at age ten. She began to dabble at this tender age and by the time she was in high school, Valeria's expertise brought her S20 for each watercolor. At the present, her oils, acrylics and watercolors hang in private collections throughout California, Washington and Utah. One year ago, - Valeria went professional withher art work. She started doing woodburning and enjoyed it, out of that stemmed a desire to try it on leather. The art originated in Ancient Egypt, tanned and split cowhides are used for the burning, and. the art is called "leather branding." Leather branding is not a frequently used form of art, in fact, there is only one other person that is known to do it west of the Mississippi. He lives in California and unlike Valeria, he does only seascapes. Valeria does wildlife, outdoor scenery and art with a western theme. She uses a prepared sketch she's done or a good part of the work is done freehand. A native of California, Valeria and husband Carl (Ernie) moved to this area four years ago. The natural scenery and the all but untouched habitat of the High Uinta Primitive Area, affords Valeria untold subject matter for her art. She invested in an excellent camera outfit, and takes photos of her subjects for future sketch reference. Valeria has saddle the horses, and along with the family goes the camera, out into the wilds to see what they can see. Valeria and Ernie belong to the "Mountain Man Club." And at every rendezvous, with the Yost's, so is the camera. Valeria has learned to use a compound bow and is good enough at it to use it for hunting. A fan of the black powder rifle, she one day hopes to ent- -r competition in that event. Valeria is a member of the Intermountain Society of Artists. In the past, she has taken art lessons, but the teachers really couldn't teach her anything except their own technique or style. She had too much natural talent to really learn from them. Valeria will be entering the "National Duck Stamp Contest this year. Sponsored by the Department of The Interior, the contest judges entries for the duck stamp that is associated with the annual duck hunts held in the fall. It is a good possibility that a resume will soon be sent to New York, containing slides of Valeria's work. Johnson's Gallery, in Park City at the Resort Center, is now displaying her work on consignment. It's well worth the trip to stop and see what Valeria does. With Valerias talent and beautiful work, the possibility of attaining fame in the art circles and with the public, is not an untouchable dream. In fact, it is becoming a very close reality everyday, as more and more recognization comes her way. "Students need to realize the importance of education and get the most out of everyday and every year of school. About teaching, Glendon feels, "it is different today, there is a lack of student desire as opposed to 20 years ago. The breakdown of the family has caused problems for the school system. There is an inability or lack of desire for parents to control their own children and this puts an added burden on the teachers. The laxity of the courts have made it mutually impossible for administration to get the most out of the educational system." and cooperation of many, many others. The Senior Citizen membership is very, very thankful to Marv for his years of service. Marv cares deeply about the organization and has always gone the extra mile to get things accomplished. He has spent time with the handicapped, in an effort to bring a little joy into their lives. He would bring them to Seniors for dinner and take them home again. Marv has thoroughly enjoyed his years as President. The office has enabled him to meet many people that he wouldnt have known otherwise. Marv has a deep love for his family, neighbors and building to a reality, with the help Elmer intends to begin his office "by taking each day as it conics and deal with it accordingly." He has some plans he would like to put in effect and will implement those in the near future. Many thanks are extended to Marv and best wishes are extended to Elmer. By Betty Larsen Elections were held April 27 for officers of the South Summit Senior Citizens. Newly-electe- d officers are Elmer Olson, Presi- dent; Ross Lefler, Second Vice President; Mary M archant, Secretary; Letha Miles and Lucille Simpson, Board Members.
