Preparations for the festival began about four months ago. Under the direction of Superintendent Darryl White, the North Summit School District Arts Council was formed. Jim Marsh, N.S. Music Instructor, Rod Christensen, N.S. Art Instructor, Terry Black, Middle School teacher and Louise Richins, Elementary School teacher, worked together with Superintendent White to coordinate and plan the various activites to be included festival. in the week-lonGrant Piercy, president of the North Summit Arts Council, was invited to encourage community participation in the Festival. He in turn asked Carol France, a well known local artist, to organize the community involvement. Working with Janece Lemon, also an accomplished local artist, they organized arts and crafts displays g and demonstrations of almost every imaginable skill. The tremendous support and participation in all art forms from both the students and community members was nothing short of outstanding. I was really, really pleased with the contributions we received from the three schools," said Rod Christensen. "The students and teaches were just tremendous to work with. "We received excellent community support, he continued. "I think everyone was overwhelmed with the displays and the demonstrations. There is such an incredible amount of talent in this relatively small school district. It was just fantastic!" The Festival was officially launched Monday, April 20, with a Choir Assembly. Wednesday, the Middle School The Advanced Stupresented dent Piano Recital, in the high school auditorium, under the direction of Jim Marsh, fifth, sixth and seventh grade students had the thrill of performing for friends Senior Citizen News , and family on the magnificent Steinway grand piano. The program was excellent. Also on Wednesday night, the fifth grade students presented a physical education program in the Middle School gymnasium entitled, Fifth Grade in Action. The program was a presentation of physical skills and acrobatics. Under the direction of Terry Black and Jim Brooks, the students presented various exercises, jump rope routines, parachutes, tumb ling, a calisthenic dance to the tune of YMCA and the classic These young people exhibited remarkable stamina and dexterity. Mrs. Black and Mr. Brooks obviously conduct an excellent PE program. On Thursday, the "Spring Band Concert" was presented in the High School Auditorium. Under the direction of Jim Marsh, the North Summit Jazz Band, Sixth Grade Band, Junior Braves Band and Varsity Band performed a variety of musical selections which presented numerous solo opportunities. The student's proficiency clearly demonstrated . the many hours of practice and hard work that had gone into the preparation of this school year's musical activities. FestivClimaxing the week-lon- g al were arts and crafts exhibits, displays and demonstrations in the High School Gymnasium.Thursday evening, and beginning at noon Friday, teachers and high school girls directed small groups through the exhibits. This was an excellent learning experience for the students because of the opportunity they had to see, and be a part of, the many art an craft demonstrations being presented by skilled local artists. Tug-of-Wa- North Summit Ethel Pennybaker Mountainland Area Conference follow-u- p will be held at the Depot May 8 from 10 a.m. until after lunch. All the Senior Citizens in this area are encouraged to attend. The energy program was again brought before the group. A single person making less than $449 can take advantage of this if he is a Senior Citizen. Our Mother's Day Program is scheduled for May 13. The very special festival, which was held April 23 and 24. We feasted on beef stroganoff over noodles, pears, hot rolls, cherry, banana molded salad and ice cream roll Wednesday and Friday found us enjoying macaroni and cheese with franks, green salad, beets, French bread and Bv r. groups and soloists performed continually for the delight and enjoyment of all. Arts and crafts exhibited included contributions from almost every student in the district. Each Elementary student received a "Ribbon of Participation" for their contribution to the Festival. This sunny Thursday, we had 65 members at our center. Community artists and demonstrations included quilting, sewv, , . - ing, needlecraft, rug hooking, . special day in honor of. our Past President Marv Simpson. Our cooks prepared a special dinner. We had turkey with dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, hot rolls, relish dish, cranberries, mixed vegetables, fruit salad and we finished with cake and ice cream. We presented Marv with a beautiful oil painting of his house. It was painted by Jo McGregor. Our guests were Ed and Reta Carter and Betty Larsen of the Bee. Mary Marchant read two more items for us to discuss from the issues discussed at our area conference. We all were full of good food and spent the afternoon playing UNO, quilting, card playing and pool. South Summit By Ann Miller The first of May is giving us April showers and now the scenery will change to green. Soon our lilacs will be in bloom and we will have our May flowers. Our cooks surprised us with a spaghetti dinner. We had meat balls with spaghetti, toasted garlic bread, tossed salad with a choice of dressings, string beans and for dessert, fruit cake with a vanilla sauce. This will be televised on national television. If she wins there, she will go on to contest for Miss Universe. The blond, hazel eyed Miss Anderson is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 130 lbs. As the contest is strictly a beauty, poise and a personality contest, she surely does shine as she has been a model for ZCMI, Talent Casting Agency of Salt Lake City, and Dees. She has done ramp modeling for ZCMI and Nordstroms of Salt Lake City and at the present time is employed for Nordstroms at the Crossroads Mall in Salt Lake City. Tonya won over 24 other contestants in the State of Utah. Her hobbies are dancing, jogging and racquetball. She states that she prefers basic lines and is more or less a tailored person. She likes colors uui mu a lot of frills and ruffles. In keeping with her taste, her lovely gown will be simple but delightful. The fabric will be an original made by the Kennecott Copper Company. It will be made of copper. The company will be mashing the copper and making a fabric that will have the mashed copper embedded in it. There will be a large copper sunburst of the same copper that will make a design to encircle her head. The gown is a very important segment of the competition, as well as the swim suit contest.
