Show nfufc Martha Mills continued from front family until Albert died on Nov. 12, 1942. Martha gave birth to six children: two boys and four girls. 'She raised three to maturity, plus the daughter of a sister, Grace, the oldest, was born i April 29, 1907. Alice, the second, was born Sept. IS, 1908. She died on March 28, 1915. Emma, the third, was bom Sept. 18, 1910. Albert, the fourth child, and first son, was bora March 4, 1916. But Martha and Alberts joy turned to sorrow when he died on March 9 just five days old. Martha, the fifth child, was born on Sept. 30, 1918. She died on July 2, 1920. On Nov. 10, 1919, Martha's sister Estella Trone gave birth to a baby girl. Her mother died the same day. The baby named Estella Marion, was brought to Martha when die was eight months old. Martha had just lost her own baby Martha. Her sister's child was a great joy to her and was raised as her own. Fay, Martha and Alberts sixth child and second son, was born on March 30, 1922. When Martha lost her husband Albert, she determined she would and not lapse into self-pit- y inactivity. Her sorrow was compounded when her only son entered the service the following spring. The country was at war, and Martha felt no matter what might happen to her son, she had to face it as others had. She decided to pick .up and leave home. Moving to Salt Lake, she went to work in the Remington Arms Plant. When the plant closed, she went to work at Hill Field Air Force Base in Ogden, where she worked until the war was over. Martha went to work in the old Primary Children's Hospital on North Temple in 1945, where she worked until she was called to serve a mission for the LDS Church. At the age of 69, Martha began serving a mission in the San Diego, Calif. District. Martha returned to the Primary Children's Hospital for a short time after her mission, but felt she was neglecting her genealogy work, so after almost ten years at the hospital, she resigned. Several years later, Martha went to live with Douglas and Barbara Smith in Salt Lake. Barbara is Martha's niece once removed through marriage. This is the same Barbara Smith who is the President of the LDS Church Relief Society Organization. Martha stayed with the Smith family for 18 years, where she was affectionately known as Aunt Martha by all of Edgehill First Ward and Hillside Stake. While there, she assisted in rearing another whole family,' a loved and valuable family member who will always be an important part of those children's memories. In 1975, after living elsewhere for 32 years, Martha came home to Hoytsville, where she now lives with her oldest daughter, Grace. Quoting from Marthas journal. It took many hours, days, weeks and years of hard work and careful planning to make a living and raise a family on a farm. Parents plan, scheme, and sacrifice so that their children might get the best life has to offer. Many comforts are sacrificed clothes are mended, remade and handed down. Good nutritious food is prepared. Much of it is provided by the farm. Gardens are planted, watered and cared for generally by the women. The men are too busy on their big projects. As the peas, beans and other vegetables are matured, a daily trip is made to the garden to gather and prepare them for dinner. Think of the time consumed in picking and shelling a big milk bucket of fresh peas. All surplus is canned and dried for winter use. No waste on the farm. It grieves me to see the waste in modern homes today. My niece Ardelle Beech West tells a Aunt story on me. She says, Martha has a box carefully sealed and laid away marked, 'save this pieces of string too small to use. Yet with all the work, economizing and sacrificing on the farm, it is rewarding. In my estimation, the best place to rear children is the farm. They enjoy the great animals, and work. They are brought up with responsibilities. They have their part in the work and activities of the farm and home. This is something of value to them all their lives. I 'wn 0 wnvr ra,,y mcntc.
