| Show former governor of idaho blown up by dynamite at threshold of home bomb had been placed at the gate and exploded as he entered inflict ng injuries which re suited in death in a few minutes haldwell Oal dwell idaho frank steinen berg former governor of the state was killed at 6 45 saturday evening ft his home in the suburbs of this town A dynamite bomb had been laced at the gate with some con frivance by which it was exploded as ie entered both legs were bown off and he lived but twenty minutes the governor was killed at the west gate leading to the back door of his home it is apparent the assassin new his habits since a stranger would have supposed he would go in at the front gate but it was his habit to use the other the victim retained consciousness about twenty five min utes he was struck down at 6 45 and died at 7 10 being conscious un til he breathed his last when he was brought in and laid on the bed he asked who shot mea then he at emited empted to sit up but sank back with the exclamation for god s sake turn me over I 1 am dying he was conscious he did not seem to understand what was eald to him he thought he had been shot and inquiries were not noticed nothing being learned from him that would throw light upon the deed he was terribly wounded by the death dealing missile the right arm was nearly torn off hanging by a few mere threads all his right side was tearfully torn the leg being mangled and shattered the left leg was also badly shattered the features of the victim of the outrage were not disfigured portions of clothing were scattered for fifty yards the victim himself was thrown ten feet from the gate where a small hole eight or ten inches in depth shows the spot where the infernal ma chine lay the gate is gone not a splinter being found all the windows in the side of the house were broken and much glass was broken in other houses as much as a block away there is no known reason tor the outrage bu tt ls charged to some the famous inner circle of the coeur dalene dynamiters whom he prosecuted so relentlessly in 1899 while he was governor is in com munica alon authorities of that coun ty and s prepared to pu the full sup port of the state behind the officials there in running down the perpetrator of the crime it is thought probable that the lead ing detective agency of the country will be send some of its best men to the scene deceased was governor of the state from 1897 to 1901 having been twice elected he was born in keokuk iowa forty four years ago and had been in idaho since 1887 he leaves a wife and three children five different men are being held on trivial charges until they can ex plain their whereabouts at the time of the murder it is believed the dynamite was ex plodded by pulling a wire pieces of wire and waxed fish line were found in the trees on the lawn further it is believed that two bombs were used to make certain of carrying out the purpose of the assassins they seem to have been together both being pulled at once |
