Show harrowing ride in a runaway airship AERONAUT TELLS OP VOYAGE ABOVE LAKE MICHIGAN CLOTHES FROZE TO BODY capt william Matt eray G ves graph account of unwelcome trip S agle M estep meant plunge into eternity gaylord mich dressed in a natty gray flannel yachting suit capt 1 ham Matt eray was seen the other morning at wolverine shortly before be started off in search of his airship the columbia which he left anchored to some trees in a bg swamp 15 miles east of wolverine hig experience both while on board the disabled ship and after land ng will be enough to fill a book he was nearby drowned three different times encountered wild animals after making the land ing slept in the dense forest miles from any human inhabitant lost him self in the woods after wal ening and wandered around all day before be finally reached a place where he could be directed back to civilization capt Matt eray was 20 year old on the day he started h s famous trip heis a native of paris france where he got his early training he has crossed the english channel by the air route has exhibited in the east and middle states and as far west as the iowa cities he gives a graphic description of his adventure the crowd was so great at the fair grounds I 1 at first did not care to make the trip on account ot the high winds which I 1 could see by the traveling clouds the crowd which had come over miles to see tha big ship which had been on exhibit tion for two days began to talk fake and I 1 saw no way out of it I 1 started to make the trip between 5 30 and S clock in the afternoon and in about two minutes after she got under way I 1 ran into the high winds which threw the gasoline engine out of kilter I 1 was already over green bay I 1 got there so fast that landing was imps sible it began to get dark I 1 tried to land again but got into the water I 1 threw out some ballast and rose above the clouds the next time I 1 tried to land it was in a big lake I 1 think it was lake michigan I 1 could see nothing but water I 1 had thrown the engine out short ly alter I 1 started as I 1 wished to save the lighter ballast to make a landing II 11 I 1 got a good chance the next time when I 1 arose I 1 ot into the higher atmosphere and my wet clothes froze to my bod the big gas bag was dripping and as soon as we struck the higher air it was cov ered with a thick coating of ice I 1 expected to get killed any moment but made up mind I 1 would stick till the finish but was going to cut the ropes from the frame work of the ship and float with the gas bag it the worst came the frame work was so frail that one misstep would have thrown me into space I 1 was hungry and thirsty from be ing in the high air and nearly frozen and became exhausted so I 1 made a net out of the landing rope across the i frame of the ship tied myself to it and fell asleep I 1 must have slept a ions time and was awakened by the basket striking on tree I 1 untied a n and a n he wa dashed in to the water myself made a lasso out of the drag rope and after striking several trees finally got the rope over one and fas bened it climbing down to the ground and pulled the ship with me antas bening the canvas rudder I 1 made a bed of it at the toot of the tree and went to slee I 1 was awakened in the night by a big black bear which came sniffing around but he did not attempt to do any harm I 1 saw all kinds of wild animals an 1 dozens of deer which wo ild give a stare at the big thing in the air and run away in alarm I 1 arose in th morning and walked around tor tour hours covering about ten miles and found myself at the starting point took another start and late erday arrived here in an exhausted condition I 1 am now going after the ship capt Matt eray has been sailing the air for 16 years and has had several narrow escapes |
