The old Orem mother of five was living a very normal life with no clue that she was about to be stricken by multiple health problems including cancer, Myasthenia Gravis (neuromuscular disease), lung disease, and congestive heart failure. Thirteen years ago Karen and her family began an unwanted journey that hit them with more pain, heartache, and financial stress than anyone should bear. Karen has spent almost two years of her life in the hospital fighting assorted medical ailments. She is currently a patient at the UCLA Medical Center, awaiting a heart transplant. To help with medical expenses amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars, Karens family and friends organized the Karen Bascom Foundation in hopes of raising the funds necessary for Karen medical needs. Two benefit concerts have been held to raise money, but have not boon as successful as the foundation had anticipated. Karen is married to Kent Bascom, a Roosevelt native and a 1971 gradu 48-yc- ate of Union High. Kents father, Elvyn Bascom, and several other members of his family and many of his friends still live in the Uintah Basin, so the foundation asked volunteers from the communities to perform in a variety show scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Union High. Getting Cancer, Losing a Child Karens medical problems first began in 1990 while she was pregnant with her sixth child. Doctors discovered and diagnosed her with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in her chest and, because of the type of cancer, chemotherapy waa started immediately. The chemotherapy led to the premature birth ofher son, Ty, who died three days later. After three long years of chemotherapy and radiation, Karen was cured of the cancer only to face numerous health problems created by the chemotherapy treatments and radiation. She developed a lung disorder, esophagus and stomach diseases, endocrine system problems, bone deterioration requiring surand even congestive heart gery failure in July 2000. When her heart failed, doctors at the University of Utah Medical Center immediately implanted Karens first artificial heart (LVAD), which Karen reports was the most difficult of all her health problems for her body to overcome because she was so weak. In the next year, she was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease. Myasthenia Gravis. Six months later, her first LVAD. failed and she was forced to undergo another massive surgery to replace it with a new one.
