ME-Uni- on's Utah Wildlife Board approves wild turkey hunting rules for '03 season About the same number of wild turkey hunting permits as last season and changes to get additional people involved in wild turkey hunting in Utah were approved by the Utah Wildlife Board at a Sept. 10 meeting in Richfield. The board approved 724 Rio Grande permit for Utaha2003 spring hunts, a decrease of 53 from the 777 offered for the 2002 hunts. The board also approved 550 Merriam's permits, a decrease of five from the 555 offered for 2002. A total of 1,355 wild turkeys found new homes in Utah in the past 12 months, said Dean Mitchell, upland game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. Unfortunately, during that time some wild turkeys were lostbecause oflong-terdrought across the state and a heavy winter in parts of northern and central Utah. Interest in wild turkey hunting in Utah has escalated considerably and many people have waited a longtime to draw a permit, Mitchell Baid. Establishing a two-yewaiting period forboth subspecies of turkeys in Utah, and changing the bonus point system so people with the most bonus points have the best chance possible of drawings permit, are two things that could be done to get these people involved in wild turkey hunting.
