Show State shortfall pushes back plans for new UBATC building By Lezlee E. Whiting Plans for a new $9 million building in Vernal to be used by the Uintah Basin Applied Technology College and Utah State University Uintah Basin have been pushed a year due to the state revenue shortfall. The good news is the project has been recommended for placement on the state's building priority list for next year. "They (state lawmakers) didn't bond deep enough to allow us to have it. they okayed $107 million in bonds, which barely completed projects approved a year ago by the governor ... just enough to reinstate those projects and finish them." explained Dick Jones. UBATC regional president. "We have confidence that we have a pretty good chance next year. The project originally estimated to cost around $1 1 million has been scaled back to $9 million. The Community Impact Board approved $2 million loan for the project, pending the state funding, but Jones said that at this time it appears it would not be used. The proposed building is 61.920 square feet, and would be built on land located near Uintah High which is owned by UBATC and the Uintah School District. The land was purchased last year with assistance from the legislature. said Jones. Enrollment at the technology college is based on "membership hours rather than credits. In 2001. the UBATC had 595.000 membership hours, and served 4.600 people. The UBATC is serving more of the population percentage wise than the three largest technology colleges in the state, he said. Due to budget cuts of $456,500 this year, the UBATC was forced to delay the start of some new programs and decrease evening classes. This resulted in an enrollment decline of about 1.5 percent according to Jones. N. 180 N. 300 E.. Roosevelt Supporters of local Medical Scholarships ing.
