She grew up V 6' 9 i fr, M Li, SHAKING CULTURES The Japanese culture was in the spotlight at Roosevelt Middle School last week. Fourth grade students were fortunate to hear all about Japan (Pictured left to right Chris Dye, Josh Dye, and Naoshi. in Springdell, Utah. She attended Canyon View Jr. High, Orem High, Ricks, and USU. Her favorite teacher in school was the orchestra teacher. Her least favorite was her science teacher because she didnt like science. Once she was introduced to music, she was excited about it. Now it ia her favorite thing. Mrs. Wheeler teaches the Strings class at Roosevelt Junior High. She also teaches private lessons. In bet, she loves music to much that if she could trade places with anyone, it would be a professional violinist However, Mrs. Wheeler feels that her family is right for her. She is married, has three sons (ages seven, six, and two), and one daughter (bon laat fall). Her favorite thing to do is toplay with her kids, and to be with her family. She also likes camping, water and snow skiing, hiking, orchestras, Stockmans, steak, and the color yellow. She prefers ketchup to mustard. She Bays the best gifts are thoughtM gifts. To be her favorite student you need to practice. And her layorne presi- dent of the United states ia Thomas Jefferson because he played the violin. Rachel Wheeler UBATC students win big in FBLA BUS DRILL Students are required to participate in two bus evacuation drills per year. These students at Neola Elementary are shown leaving the bus via the rear door as part of this drill. The school has all students practice so that all know how to properly exit a bus if something should happen on a field trip or when riding to or from school. The bus drivers conduct the evacuation drills. Student helpers are assigned to assist others as they exit. competition UBATC students netted ten awards during the State FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Competition held April 11 13 at the Sheraton Hotel ix Salt Lake City. Jennifer Howard, also a senior at Union High and daughter of Dougind Leah Howard, placed first in Word Processing I; De Lacey Mitchell, a Union High senior and daughter of Nile and Annette Mathiaen, took third place in Word Processing II and together with Catherine Murray, i terofMark and Helen Murray, a, at Union, took third place in the ! top Publishing competition; Union High eenior Blake Sprouse, son ofTom and Mohea Sprouse, Milton Eachler, senior atUnion High and ion ofRoger And Noreen Eschler.and Run Grant, son of Ray and Margaret Grant and . senior at Union High, took fourth place in theMultiMedia Presentation; Jennifer Betts a senior at Union High and daughter of Howard and Lisa Betts, took fifth place in Accounting II; Ben Henderson, son of Jeff and Carol Henderson, a junior at Union High waa awarded seventh place in Job Interview and Tyler Hunt, senior st Union High and son of Bruce and SandraHunt, took Superior" in Who's Who in FBLA. FBLA winners were awarded certificate! for placing and all first place winners received a certificate and a plaque. Jennifer Betts andMeeanArko qualified to attend the National FBLA Competition to be held this June in Nashville, Tennessee. -- JAPANESECUL1 URL LESSON Roosevelt Middle Schtxl 4th grade students spent aday learning about Asian countries and their culture. Some of the activities they enjoyed were: using chopsticks while eating rice, Japanese Kunji, Sumo wrestling, Japanese games, and the art of origami. Local presenters were Steve Pure, Jung Hee Powell, Josh Dye. and Naoshi (a Japanese visitor staying with the Kyle Dye family). "When it was announced, I waa pretty shocked when they called my name. I thought, I'm from a little town, from Roosevelt, it wont happen." Trad, daughter ofLynn and Gwen Prescott, Neola, joined Skills after her UBATC drafting instructor, Bob Naylor, also a Skills USAr VICA advisor, invited her to become a member ofthe organization. Her curiosity lead her to read up on the group, and once she found out what Skills USA-VICwas about, she couldn't wait to become involved. It is a great opportunity. It teaches you leadership gki Lis, high moral standards and prepares you for the world. It prepares you for whateveryou need to do in life, Trad raid. Trad decided to run for office to gain experience. She actually had to campaign for the position. She began by determ ining what were important issues to her and her local Skills chapter. She created posters, and asked three other delegates to support her run for office. She is one of seven, secondary officers chosen to represent Utah. There are also seven post secondary officers as state representatives.
