Show LETTERS ELECTION continued from page 2 during her recent hospitalisations Continued from page and passing I especially want to thank Lloyd Neilsen for being there to help Becky (Rebecca Wilson) until the family could get there. Doctors Gary White, Glenn Robertson, Patterson, and Ripplinger, were exceptionally caring and compassionate. I have probably failed to mention others, but want to thank each and every one. Everyone there was very supportive and helpful to our family through the whole ordeal. The people of the Uintah Basin can be very proudofthe Uintah Basin Medical Center. Even under such stressing conditions, the experience was a positive one. DianneCurry Brock Vandals create mess and heartbreak To the people who vandalized my mothers motor home last week. They broke the windshield, put sugar in oil and gas in the radiator and tires. My mother was upset by it. But it has left my children broken hearted to think someone would do this. They spent the summer with their grandma in it by our house. I hope you are happy. Shannon Wardell and kids WATER 1 of Dry Gulch Irrigation. that need to be corrected to entice businesses. We need to look at our present needs, but more importantly we need to look at our future needs, he says. Gardner says more important than anything, people need to exercise their .right to vote. I will commit myself to your service, but I want to remind you that men and women have died for our freedom and the right to vote. So I encourage you to vote for whom you will, but please vote." Bill Ball is a former Roosevelt with the City Councilman who prompting of friends and family feels that it's time he got back into the local political scene. Hall says his knowledge of city government and his experience would be an asset to both the city and residents. Hall, a lifetime resident of Dear Editor, Continued from page 1 Moat of Dry Gulch s seven water classes are about out of water, however, there has still been enough for some formers to water their crops through August Winterton noted that most formers are just barely closing their water turns now. In Ballard, residents are encouraged to conserve water through occasional reminders on their water bill. This year the town, which gets its water from the Ute Indian Tribe, hasnt seen a water shortage. I dont know that there is a shortage," explained Ballard Town's secretary, Maris Secrest. The town's water board has not yet voted on any kind of a water conservation policy-- however, the item is on their next agenda. Roosevelt, has been the manager of the meat department for over 40 years with Safeway, IGA and now Davis Jubilee. He served on the Duchesne County SearchandRe8Cueforl5years, was involved with Roosevelt City Boys Baseball for 12 years and served two terms as a Roosevelt City Councilman from 1982 - 1990. If elected, Hall would work towards completion of the Gulch Parkway and seeing a new recreation center come to fruition if at all possible. He supports construction of a regional airport between Roosevelt and Vernal and pledges to buoy up the citys police and fire departments. He lauds the improvements made in the city, particularly the new addition on the Utah State University Uintah Basin branch campus, expansion of the hospital and the new UBTAUBET Communications building, but at the same time voices concern over lost tax dollars that are going to Vernal stores. All of these businesses will provide more jobs andtax base, but I hate to see Roosevelt becoming a bedroom community ofVemal when it comes to shopping, says Hall. "I feel we need to aggressively seek new businesses and industry to locate here, while assisting our present business community. Bryon Murray is the youngest candidate on the ballot The Unique Lamps. Thatisnttheonly unique thingabout this candidate. Murray, who was injured in a farm accident as ayoungBter, Thinking Out Loud Mom, my sock is buzzing," my son said, handing me the offending object. It had been white with a gray toe and heel, but after weeks ofbeing stretched over big smelly boy feet and divinginto sweaty Skeachers they were hardly recognizable as socks of any kind. But, why the buzzing? Surely they were not equipped with an odor alum? You look inside, I tried handing it back to him. "Uh, uh, he said, explaininghed been trying to put the sock on when it started makingthe creepy buzzzzzz buzzzzzz and he wasnt goingto touch it. It was one of those short socks, without a cuff and rather crunchy from being dried out on the line, vibrating by the violent buzz inside. The line! That was it! It had been outside, where nature exists, and where there is nature there is sure to be an opportunistic bug that flew inside. In the world ofbugs a sock like this might be considered a luxury condo or at the very least, a studio apartment! Without thinking I began to turn the sock inside out and a huge house fly, the biggest I've ever seen hit me right between the eyes then ricocheted offstrikinga wall and bobbed up the hallway. off-kilt- er Wow! my son cried, watching its 60CSD6. Here,' I said absently handing the sock back to chase down a fly swatter. He was cold, really cold, or he'd zoomed away. No, this was a fly on the rocks, with wings beating in slow motion. Thank goodness he wasn't a bee that could have stunga big toe. Then Id of really heard the criticism. " Mom, we have a dryer you know. is physically disabled but he hasnt let the challenges he faces limit his ambitions. The father of two children, he is agraduateofPartners in Policymaking and founded Wolf Pack" a support group for people with disabilities. He also serves on the Governors Council for People with Disabilities. He has been actively involved in discussions to build a covered swimming pool and recreation center in Roosevelt, and is a strong supporter of the plan. I am willing to seek conventional on-goi- funding and sources, he relates. This center would provide the community with wholesome activities where there are few if any now. Murray advocates a transportation system for those who are indigent, disabled or elderly, and others who lack vehicles. He has been promoting this idea by meeting with Duchesne County Commissioners and the Uintah Basin Association of Governments in attempts to find a Binding source for his proposed transportation Bystem. "This would be a great service at minimal cost, he states. He is opposed to the use of Community Impact Board Binds being used by the city to build a new golf course clubhouse. Murray believes the $500,000 CIB loangrant Binding package should be used for activities which will benefit a larger part of the community. I believe in putting our money where our youth are. Murray, who hasnt been hesitant to let his voice be heard on numerous community issues over the years, says his disability will lend an added dimension to his service to the city. As a person with disabilities I have spent all my life having to find alternative ways to accomplish things. As a city councilman I will look for alternative ways to fond projects without raising taxes. Larry Murray makes no bones about it, as a businessman of 36 years in Roosevelt he has a vested interest in this community.Murray, the owner of Murray Motor, a business he operates with his family, was born and raised in Roosevelt. Murray would like to see investor confidence restored in the city and wants to help promote marketing techniques for Roosevelt and encourage businesses that are considering locating close to the area to look at our community. Growing up in Roosevelt we had a smaller population and a larger variety of businesses. In my lifetime, our economy has become focused on energy, the oil fields, he relates. Today our community is in the middle of strongenergy growth andyet we have vacant buildings on our main street. Sales taxdollars that should be building our community are going elsewhere, contributing to the growth in other communities. I will work with residents of the community, current businesses, dubs and organizations to improve this sale ofgoods and services from our community. High on his political platform is a goal of increased city beautification. One way to accomplish that is to shift more of the citys resources to that area, while keeping property taxes reasonable, says Murray. A beautifiil city reflects prosperity and attracts positive growth. We need to take the beautification ofour city more seriously to build a better community. We cannot afford to neglect the infrastructure of our city, or we will pay mare in the future for our neglect today. Now is the time to improve our Main Street, parks, and buildings to provide a better quality folifewithaclcan.safecnvironnienl. Increased industiy and secure jobs are also areas Murray would focus on if elected. At the same time, he wants to encourage city leaders to explore resources that can be developed to aid economic development in Roosevelt. and staunch Murray is a long-tim- e supporter of the city's police and fire departments, and will continue to bolster the two departments os a city council member. He is a past director of the Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce, and has served as a member of the Duchesne County Planning and Zoning Board, BLM Advisory Board and Governors Boardon Water Quality. The council needs to care about your opinions. I will listen to your concerns andopinions, because I care about Roosevelt, today and for the future. I am easily accessible, says Murray. Roosevelt isa great place to live and raise a family. I just want to help make it better. Alfred Stringham has lived in Roosevelt for most of his life. He has a technical degree fromSpartanSchool ofAeronautics in Electronic Engineering Technology specializing in He served in the military for eight years and worked in the engineering department of KUTV Channel 2 in Salt Lake. He currently owns and operates S&S Service Center. As a business owner and having raised my family here, I have a vested interest in seeing this city prosper, Stringham says. He has served on the board of the Duchesne County Sportsman Club and the Utah Wildlife Federation. He assisted in forming the first Ducks Unlimited chapter in Roosevelt He has served on the Duchesne County Plan- years Board ofTrustees. Stringham has been an active supporter of the Duchesne County Search and Rescue, the Roosevelt City Police Department, Roosevelt Fire Department and the original Roosevelt EMT association. These people perform much valuable community service and deserve all of our support. I will work to see that the city continues to give these people whatever they need to do their job, says Stringham. He believes the city needs to be more proactive in a number of areas and has an established list ofissues he will get it to work on if elected. Some of my areas of concern are: streets, lack of adequate street light-ingi- n some areas, lack of sidewalks in some critical locations, more police coverage, updated firefighting equipment. If we do not keep our fire dewith good equippartment ment and highly trained firemen our fire rating will go down and everyones cost of insurance will increase. te UINTAH BASIN STANDARD.
