Show Summer 1999 Uintah Basin's RECR6AT10N GUIDC The Uintah Basin Standard 2 Small town America is alive and doing fine! Wiat do small towns have that big towns can never have? Small town celebrations! Oh, sure, the big towns have things going on all the time, but they just aren't the same as when friends and neighbors canry on the tradition of celebration that exists in small towns. These small town doingS may not have the flash and glitter of the oty. but they have the heart and soul of the country, something cities could use a whole lot more of. The Basin's celebration literally rose from the dkt Altamont. Ft Duchesne, Tabfona and Neota's rodeos are rooted in the livestodc enterprises that have been a part of the Basin since the Utes first tended their horses on the meadows formed along the rivers of the Basin. When the reservation was opened for settlement the same lure of free land that had created the energy behind the "Manifest Destiny" that moved people across a continent brought people here looking for a better life. They had their work cut out for them in this demanding, high desert country. As you dnve through the Basin, take away everything that is green that isn't growing along a river. AS the fields, all the trees, everything is gone, look at what is left then paint afl that was green the same color. That is what the early settlers faced. Everything that makes life comfortable today, the irrigation systems, the roads, the utilities, the homes, the schools, the churches are aM the results of their efforts. Their accomplishments are even more remarkable gven the money they didn't have to work with. They (fed it by working together. That willingness to work together is stiH seen today hi every celebration we Bargcowtxys&jrts area way cfe that hasnttanishcdin the UrtahBasn home to ranches, wide-ope- n spaces and rodeos. enjoy.
