Show Page 18 - UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. Watching pro porta is super, but all the big bucks and lack of play due to strikes and lockouts has turned off many fans, but there is always the high school scene to keep loyal supporters geared up whether it be wrestling, football, basketball, softball, baseball, etc. Female high school sports has sure come a long way since their beginning years in the 1970s. I will admit that at first I wasn't too interested in the lady sports, and 1 do a courecall back in the ple of female coaches, who felt it was their duty to keep me informed on their games. While I was in Vernal they let me know that there were other sports besid es wrestling. However, I don't think they lived in Vernal too long because at times it was the Only Sport that really matter in Uintah County due to all the championship banners up on the gym wall. Now-a-daa game involving the Bev Richens, Sheila featuring girls Hutchison, Tami Nielsen, April Mecham, Tosha Berrett, Jackie Morrill, Kim Kettle, Angie Gayler, Chasity Stewart, etc., of Union; Amber White, Gardner of Uintah; Shanna Mullins, S henna Green, Duchesne; Michelle Brotherson, Wyann Weidman, Altamont, and Alicia Uresk of Hurricane provide plenty of excitement with an aggressive neveieey-di- e style of play. When I was preparing to cover my first ever girls' ball game in 1975, 1 had pictured a player in a long dress trying without much luck to dribble the precious ball and maybe scoring one basket per quarter with a final score of probably S to 6 or maybe even 11 to 10 or 13 to 12 or a shutout like 2 to 0. I discovered girls hoop was moplayed at a non-sto- p tion. Some players 1 recall are Kim (might be Kym) Buckalew, Abegglen, Griffith, Green twins from Uintah and a guard from Union with the first name of Michelle plus all the Nielsens ( whole bunch) from Cougarland ss well the flip mid-197- ys shooting attack HutchisonRichens plus the of One game I will never forget involved arch-rival- s, Duchesne and Altamont. The Longhorns had the more experienced team with Duchesne quite youthful, but not one to bsck down. There almost was a fight and it didnt involve a Uintah wrestler battling a Union matman. Once order was restore, Altamont won the game. Unions girls hoopsters provided some pure pumped up action when they beat Snow Canyon, 1998 champion, in overtime to advance to the title game where they whipped Hurricane for the 1999 crown. The Tracy Roberts - 848-5- 4 Mr. ft Mrs. BoydeTurnbow.Lynn, Mr. ft Mrs. Jerry Tumbow, Mr. ft Mrs. Doyle Tumbow, Mr. ft Mrs. Neil Harms ton, and Mr. ft Mrs. Steve Anderson all visited Florence Tumbow over tne weekend. 17 all-arou- game from Morrill, Mecham, Nielsen led the Cats to their championship. Now it is time to go from dribbling down the court to walking down Main Street. Since I have lost weight I have been putting my legs to work in order to keep in shape. Tuesday, I took pictures at Duchesne High School, and then 1 went on a walkingjourney down the main drag of Duchesne. I dashed by Zions Bank, Kohls Market, Als Food Town (I like that name), Cowan's Cafe, Wells Club, and then back to the school to return to Roosevelt by car instead ofby thumb. Wednesday morning 1 went on my daily walk, but I was back in Roosevelt, Utah. Sometimes I walk down an alley where I try to match up the back of a store such as Marion's Variety, Sather's Jewelry, Coffee Time with their fronts. Why? Because 1 cank dribble that well or slaqi dunk a basket, and besides it provides some form of interest from simply walking. and Jenny Nielaen-Neila- spent a few days in Tabiona.
