Show T Pace 2 - January 2b. T iwv Uintah Basin Standard Elected Officials Need To Hear From You Within a week,' or possibly sooner, the Roosevelt City Council will decide whether they will go on record in support ofa proposal that could bring a privately-ru- n medium security 500- - bed prison to the city. We urge our city leaders and citizens to carefidly examine the pros and consofbecom-in- g a community that is home to a large correctional facility. When that is done, we urge citizens in Roosevelt and the surrounding communities to contact city and county officials and provide them with their opinions. Some of the draw backs to consider are whether you want to live in a town that will forever be linked to and dependant, in part on the prison industiy.Theieisasmallamountof risk of possible escape by an inmate or inmates, although correctionsofficials say prisoners who make it outside the walls have one thing on their mind and thats leaving the area as fast as they can. Camp followers' will come. Ifyou cant hvwiththe fact that some inmate families, may ofthem on welfare, will move to the area, you dont want a prison. Will unforeseen circumstances be something we can live with? Howmuch ofa say will the community have should the prison expand, for instance? On the positive side, there s no question the prison will provide a variety ofjobs to an area which consistently has one ofthe highest unemployment rates in the state. When there are jobs, property values rise. With no prospect ofthe refinery ever opening, the prison industry would certainly be expected to provide stable economic relief to a community battered by the boom and bust cycles ofthe oil industry. The property tax base will get a substantial shot in the arm from prison. The sales tax base is expected to see noted improvement as well from newjobs. Through our research we have learned that Cornell Corrections Inc, the company considering locating in Roosevelt, is highly thoughtofnot only intheir industiy.but inthe communities they do business in. The City Council will not hold a referendum vote on the issue, as some have suggested. For one thing, there is not time to hold such an election, and let us remember that this is the very reason we have elected officials to decide critical mattersfor the goodofthe community at - large. City leaders recognize they donthave all the answers, no one does. That is why its our responsibility to provide input to guide ourelected officials as they examine the prosand consofany will impact the city and sunounding area The more caiefullythought out and considerate the comments are from the public whether for or against the proposition a! hand-t- he greater weight they will bear on the mindsoftheCity Council. Police Ashby By Mary Wertz, At the end of the week, the Utah Blood Services Division had collect- ed more pints of blood than waa needed in Utah. The additional blood waa redistributed through the national American Red Cross system to the parts of the country which had low blood supplies due to reduced donations during the recent severe winter storms. A simple "thank you" cannot adequately express the gratitude of a in need for whons a blopd ' patient donation is the gift of life. But the American Red Cross Utah Blood Services Division knows of no better way to tell tha people and the media of Utah that they have made a difference in the lives of critically-il- l and injured people across the country. So, simply, thank you, from every person who has received blood, the gift of life. Sincerely, Gary J.
