Show UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. December 22. A seasoned voice of reason: Eleanor could be talking about this community! Newt item: December 1948 'Holiday chore lead to cheer when spring cleaning is combined with Christmas Fifty year ago, a column by then First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt appeared in the Uintah Basin Standard. Because of its relevant nature 1 to the Christmas Spirit in Roosevelt, we are reprinting it in part: "Here is a new idea in' those who dread spring housecleaning: combine it with the Christmas spirit. Why wait until spring? Why not make a festive occasion of the weeding out and sharing of our usable surplus possessions? Things which have ceased to be useful to us, things we are tired of, could begin life all over again under our neighbors Christmas tree. Why not do it now and make housekeeping a joyful, generous, friendly act? Mother should not do this Christmas salvage work alone, however. Every member of the household should join in a hunt, through closets, neglected drawers, the attic. All ofthem should overhaul their books. If it is put in the light of an opportunity for Christmas gift giving in which all members of the family can join, they will probably be surprised by the things which turn on the pile to be given away. Here, for instance, is an overcoat Father has treasured for years, thinking the time might come when he would wear it again. But there are shivering men walking in the streets without any coats at all these days. Or there is an old quilt preserved in mothballs as befits an heirloom: You thought time and time again that it was too good to part with , but remember there are children that go to bed wrapped in newspapers and still are cold. Be very careful about one thing. Don't give rubbish. Rubbish is no good to anyone. Clean and remove what can be salvaged. What you are looking for is gifts, something you can eryoy giving, something you would be proud to see someone else enjoy. A good test of what to give is whether you would be glad to receive it yourself. To collect and distribute these gifts effectively should not be difficult if one person in each community makes it his job to provide leadership, and if the rest of the community is willing to cooperate. A committee should be formed to work with the organizations which know who the needy are, so that the gifts may be properly apportioned and distributed. Everyone who reads this appeal can help push the campaign. The Leaders from Utahs eight American Indian tribes agreed Friday to oppose legislation that would make English the states official language and restrict the use of other languages in state government. Uteisour native language, said Roland McCook, a member of the Ute Indian tribes governing business committee. Its obvious that English is the dominant language, but to say our language cannot be recognized is ludicrous. At a meeting organized by the Utah Division oflndian Affairs, tribal leaders voted unanimously to oppose the measure as an attack on traditional languages, culture and traditions. Here seems to me an idea that would be both and good fun. Surely Americans have the organization, common sense and good will to carry it out successfully. Christmas is the time of year when we ought to remember how much more blessed it is to give than it is to y Utah's 8 tribes to oppose English only measure Associated Press time for organization is now. Take it up with your clubs and your churches, draw upon the energy and civic pride of the Rotary the Kiwanis, and the Lions Clubs, and on the experience ofthe welfare agencies. . . This movement could be made to echo through every community in the Unitqd States. It would help to draw communities together, whether large or small it would make them conscious ofthe needs of those who have too little, and it would offer the chance for a real community Christmas. Ministers would surely be glad to announce this campaign from their pulpits; local radio stations and newspapers would gladly give information about it. In many communities firemen have for years generously helped similar campaigns. Merchants, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts would surely be helpful volunteers in the work of collecting the gifts. 1998- - The carpets you can choose from at Karl's are the latest in style, texture and color.
