Show Pam 12 - UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. November 17. 1998 by the Health Services Utilization and Research Commission of Home care sets standard for quality health care a By Steven Hansen, Executive Director, Utah Association of Home Health Agencies More and more disabled and chronically ill patients are selecting home care as their first choice in health-car- e delivery. The federal B ureau ofLabor Statistics confirms home care is the fastest-growin- g indussegment of the health-car- e try . This trend comes at a time when increasing lifespans and the aging of the heightens the need for accessible and appropriate health services. Home care sets the standard in health-car- e delivery because it provides a broad spectrum of both health and social services. It offers the latest technological advances, including services that just a few years ago could only be performed in a hospital. It combines medical, nursing, and paraprofessional care with therapy, nutritional, and mental health services - all within the comfort and security ofthe patients baby-boome- rs -- home. Home care is the most humane and compassionate way to deliver health and supportive care services because it keeps the patients family together. In the past, family members were able to dedicate extensive amounts of time and energy to care - -- for loved one. Todays families, however, are often limited in the amount of time they have for caregiving. This is due, in part, to societys smaller families and the increasing role of women in the workplace. Their ability to provide around-the-clocinformal care is more restricted. Home care allows patients to remain at home while lifting some ofthe burden from their family members. Home care keeps families together by preventing or postponing institutionalization. A recent study k, trict in Duchesne and another set at the Duchesne County library in Roosevelt. A set of lessons is ready at the Duchesne School Dis- Saskatchewan, Canada, concluded that individuals who receive home-car-e services generally spend fewer days in nursing homes and hospitals. The study also showed the core concepts of home care personalized health care that allows the patient to remain in the comfort and dignity of home - were the determining factors in elderly patients' satisfaction with their care. Finally, home care is less expen( sive than other forms ofhealth care. In 1997 the average Medicare charges per day in a hospital and skilled nursing facility were estimated at $2,121 and $454, respectively. The average Medicare charge per visit during this time was about $88. For all these reasons, home care continues to flourish as Americas form of health most sought-afte- r are ready to be reviewed by the US Department of Labor. The Vernal BLM office has employed three local participants in the program: Cleo Gardiner, Lorraine Morrill, and Bruce Millecam. Cleo and Lorraine work aa receptionists, while Bruce is employed in the warehouse. Lorraine Morrill relates that This program haa enabled me to interact with many agencies and learn more about the community and area, aa well aa being in contact with others, which is very important to me. Dave Howell, field manager for the Vemal office, stated that Cleo, Lorraine and Bruce have proven to be invaluable to the functioning of this office.
