Show i f T I Basin SPORTS Pape 16 - November 10. 1998 Uintah Basin Standard State Champs in 94. 98 Duchesne is cross country powerhouse in State of Utah By Addon Rachele Uintah High School with 22 atate crowns and Wasatch, which won five in a row before being whipped last year by the Utes, are famous for high school wrestling teams, and Tabiona High School has been a boys basketball power with two State Championship Final appearances that resulted in one title and a second place finish. They also lost to the eventual champion in 1998, and Panguitch, in the semi-finaplaced third. Union High School has received high praise for its girls basketball teams by placing second twice and sixth in three of the past four 3-State Hoop Meets; but Duchesne, which has had outstanding basketball, football, volleyball teams over the years, is a power and 2-- classes with in both the two state crowns and six individual titles plus several runnerup positions since 1990. The Eagles won their first and title in 1994 only when they scored 42 points to edge out second place Panguitch, which scored 53 counters. Dugway was third at 76, and St Joseph fourth with 102 points. Cody Moat won the 1994 individual championship at 16:18.5, and Stephen Potter of Duchesne was eighth. Jarom Grant was ninth, and Albert Foster 14th. Jared Taylor placed 18th. Also competing were Craig Moon and David Allred. During Duchesnes first comperanks the Eagles tition in the pocketed fourth in 1997, but one 2-year later emerged as the 1998 comas 53 points champ by posting pared to 58 hy runnerupGrantsville. Duchesnes Courtney Moon ended up second, and Kirk Grant was fourth, Dayne Grant placed seventh, and Andrew Spencer and Johnny Foster tied for 20th. Also competing were Ryan Moat and Cris Hoopes. The Eagles have had runners take six individual championships since 1990, but they have been won by just three competitors with Conley Moon taking the 1990 crown, Brandon Moat winning in 1991, 1992 and Cody Moat posting top honors in 1993, 1994 and 1996. Cody also placed second in 1995 when he lost in a close race, and Courtney Moon pocketed a second in 1998 to go along with his fourth place finish in 1997. Duchesne has made Top Two finishes a family affair with three-tim- e champion Cody and two-tim-e winner Brandon Moat, brothers. 1990 title winner Conley and 1998 runnerup Courtney Moon are also brothers. The Moats are also related to some of the Grant runners, who have taken part in the crosscountry program over theyears. The Moons and Moats have similar names with both starting with Ms, only four letters with two letters the same. The team is coached by Dave Moat, who is the father of Brandon, Cody and Ryan Moat, who is a freshman.
